Re: Tint, when I was younger I always had really dark tint on my cars. I think my '05 Mini was something like 5% all around. Whenever I got pulled over I would be polite, have the windows down by the time the officer got to my window with my documents ready. I was never questioned about the tint.

The 560 SEL has something absurdly dark like 10%, but it goes with the character of the car. I have the temptation to tint the LS400 something reasonable like 35%, but I'm also cheap.

Oh...my average fuel economy since I've owned it is 11L/100km.

So good! The LS400 has just hit about 2,500km with us, and according to Fuelly it's getting 9.2L/100km average, over about 65-70% highway.

Update:  10.9 now   LOL

They are surprisingly good on the highway.  Mid-high 8s is not uncommon.

Yeah man. My dad actually borrowed the LS and took it to Pittsburgh this weekend, and his trip average was 8.0L/100km. I only run Shell 91-octane.

What was his opinion??

He absolutely adores it. He's not nearly as much of a car guy as the rest of us, but has taken quite an interest since I got into this line of work. He appreciates comfort, quietness, and because he's Indian and cheap by default ( ;D ) fuel efficiency. In fact, my mom, who drives an MB C 300 and is totally averse to driving vehicles outside of her comfort zone has been borrowing the LS every now and then. For the record, my parents live only a few kilometres away so if they have a 200+ km drive, they're happy to swing by and steal the LS.

Heck yes. Financially brilliant, can't come out of the old mindset of pinching pennies because he came to this country with nothing more than the clothes on his back.

Slightly lesser extend, most 1st generation Koreans are like that, too.

Enjoyed reading your show and shine, nice car RR.

I mean....after an LS, where do you go from here? What's a logical step up that will improve on everything you already have?

http://www.autotrader.ca/cars/tesla

:-)

Anyway, you won't find a used Tesla for $15K with 200K km on it ... a fair few for $50K's with 150K km tho.
Not depreciating quite the same rate (yet).

FYI that 200,000 km at 11L/100km average is $22K in fuel not counting $1500 for oil changes over 13 years.

No engine, no care.  $22k spent hearing a glorious V8 every day is worth every penny.  Plus the peerless reliability and impeccable quality is worth something too.  I've been in the S, and even compared to my 04, the S lacks in quality of materials.

But hey..if you're happy with your car, I'm happy.

Yeah, can't argue with the sound of a good V8, owned several myself, including a mid-90's LT1 Z28 with an unusually good sounding throaty exhaust note.   My wife (girlfriend at the time) commented that the car sounded meaner than anything else she'd driven, including a mid-80's Porsche 911 she co-owned and an Olds with the "rocket" V8.   Those LT1's were old tech at the time, but the engine had so much headroom for tuning and it was no slouch...for it's day.

The interior of the S is a nice place to be for a tech oriented person, but I grant it's more sparse (no buttons) than other premium sedans.

That's the nice thing about having lots of different types of cars, there's always the right one for everyone's taste.

Yea, the interior of the S is nice...just not as opulent as my LS.  But I don't think the S was ever supposed to be.

Having worked with/socialized with many Chinese from HK in the '90s I'd say that people from India have some serious competition in terms of " being careful with their money".

I don't necessarily think being cheap is directly correlated to ethnic background. For example, our friend Firm in this forum, along with one of our mutual close friends who happens to be Vietnamese, and myself all take pride in our cheapness (read: ability to stay the hell out of debt and save considerably). That's a Vietnamese guy, an Indian guy, and Firm who happens to be the whitest man both in complexion and personality.   ;D

Being cheap and frugal are two different things in my books, though.  As well being being financially literate, which is where you want to be.
Cheap is buying the cheapest thing possible and not paying for any meals after your friends picking up the tap several times.  Frugal is going out less and using coupons.  Finally, financially literate is not going out to eat without good reason.   Just my definition, though :)

^ definitely.

Back on topic about Lexus LS.  Looking at Ron and vantage's LS's made me want to look at some used samples out there, again.

How does this look? I didn't know it had ventilated rear too! Not that they'll be used by my kids in car seat/booster if I were to get one.

This one would be sweet if I could swing it. Looks mint.

I dunno - the mileage on the newer one is "95% highway", so those kilometers don't count, right?  ::)

Assuming all checks out I would grab that white Ultra Premium with a $10.5k asking in a hearbeat.  Love the interior colour.  H A T E the gold lettering - ugh.

Jeebus that's a sweet car for 10k.

Rear bumper's been busted and 'fixed' on that one:

...and the driver's door seems ill-fitting:

Passenger-side rear fender looks like it scraped a pillar/brick wall:

Front right has curb rash:

...as does front left:

...not huge issues, but I'm guessing it's not as clean as it sounds.
