If you're in Ontario, prepare to get hammered. Insurance rates for new drivers there are horrendous. Alberta was out of control about 10-12 years ago with young people looking at $6-7K premiums for liability alone. Today, some changes in regulation have brought that down to $2000-2500 or so. Still bad, but probably half of what you'll face in Ontario.
Rates can vary greatly from car to car depending on the claim rates and average claim amounts for various makes and models. Toyotas tend to have an older demographic meaning fewer claims and lower rates. It's one of the reasons why so many people will recommend a Corolla for a new driver.
