Last spring, I almost shifted from Desjardins to the CAA QC insurance but did not, due to a technicality with my SW2 and her main daily driver.

Did they ask you to get a safety certificate for it?
They asked me this in Ontario for my Outlander since it's more than 15 years old.

A "safety certificate", not to that I remember. My actual & former insurer before they agreed to insure my SW2, both sent me to same local expertise center to check its overall condition.

So same idea. In Ontario you get a piece of paper called "safety certificate". My current insurer did not ask for such thing but I've been with them for about 10 years.
However CAA which I'm planning to move to did ask. The cost of the inspection is what I save in 1-2 month if I move over so it's a no brainier.

Just did a quote for car insurance online with CAA. Very expensive.

I find shopping for insurance ranks right up there with having a colonoscopy in the "Fun to do rankings". I hate it.  >:(

I switched to CAA Quebec as well after my previous insurer increased the cost of insuring the Mach E by 35%. Insured the home and Condo with them as well. This is where I had the most savings. $660 per year total savings.

Maybe give them a call to check their rates?

So faced with higher rates I started shopping around again. It is amazing how varied the prices are. The online quote systems sucks in almost every case. There is nothing like talking to someone.  Found much better rates with Aviva. When I called my broker and told them they contacted Intact and after much negotiating they match the new lower rates.

Was a real pain to shop around and took some time but in the end I saved myself $700 on car and home insurance.

What I suspect is that insurance companies low ball prices to get you as a customer and then in following years try and gouge you.

I have used Aviva's rates as a bargaining chip for 2 years in a row. I am in a sense wasting their time. I feel bad about that. Next year I will take a different approach. I will ask Intact for their very best price before shopping around. I will then contact Aviva. If they beat Intact again I will switch and reward them for helping me keep costs down.
