Cost of transfering Sherlock to my name
« on: August 17, 2017, 08:44:11 am »
Sorry if under wrong section. I was not sure where to post this.....

The Forte 5 I just bought has Sherlock markings. It seems I have to get it transferred to my name. Sherlock told me to go to Lebeau (Window replacement company here in Quebec) to get it done. They want $69 friggin dollars just to do a bit of paperwork. What a ripoff!!! >:(

I want to get the insurance discount so I do not see any way around paying this crazy charge.

WTF is Sherlock ?

Sherlock is a security marking system where many components of the car have a tracking number etched on them. This would make the parts traceable and less desirable to steal.

That BS stuff, just about every new car has that for years, I do think not the number of  stolen cars has gone because of this

How much of a discount do you get on the insurance?

Somehow I doubt that the Forte 5 is much of a target for chop shop thieves.

So how much do you think they should charge?

While I would say it is high I wouldn't say outrageous.

I held my nose and bit the bullet and got Sherlock transferred to my name. I would not have bothered had it not been for discount on insurance. For $69.00 all they did is walk around the car to confirm the markings are there. They then called Sherlock to have a transfer form faxed to that to be filled out. They fill it out with my contact info and fax it back to them. What is this ....... 1970 ?????!!!!!!.

Just a money grab. Too much to update a name record on a file.

I'm not sure why the insurance company needs "official" proof of the car has etching. Surely a photograph would have been sufficient.

No discount offered by Ontario Insurance carriers for etching for it's not a deterrent to theft.

How much was the discount on your insurance?

Sadly only about $10 a year. So I spent tax in $80. So it will take 8 years of savings to offset it. I would not have bothered if I new it was so little. Should have asked first.

My bad.

Seems like anything to do with etching is a rip off.  ::)

I paid to have this done on my BMW and now I paid to have it transferred to my name on my Kia. Never again. Seems like a complete waste of money. The company seems to be run in a pretty amateurish manner. The only thing that is hard to quantify is how much a deterrent these markings are to someone wanting to steal your car. Are they really a deterrent??? I do not know. I am not a car thief.  :D
