Push mower?
« on: April 29, 2017, 05:08:46 pm »
Anyone have a push mower? We have a pretty small lawn and I'm thinking of replacing our gas mower (which will go to my parents) with a push mower.

Any advice or recommendations? I can't go electric as I don't have anywhere to store it indoors. Has to live outside.

Yeah. Get a shed.

I'd buy from Lee Valley.

Apparently the key is to keep it sharp. And mow often.

You mean a push reel mower like a Scott's 20" Classic ?

The blades on the reel would get rusty every time it rains unless you kept them well oiled. You can't let your grass grow too long either, all they tend to do is push the grass down rather than cut it at that point. I've been using them since 2007 and last year switched up to an electric corded mower.

Well a reel mower I can make fit in the garage, probably use a wall hanger, since they're quite a bit more compact.

If you're in Ottawa I'll give you mine for free, it was bought in 2014 and I used it that summer and 2015.

edit: forgot about the Foz, I could actually drop it off somewhere too...

Many thanks for the offer but we are in Toronto!

Curious what made you decide to be rid of it?

^^ My next mower will be cordless electric. The EGO brand that Home Depot sells gets awesome reviews. I keep telling myself that I'll get a new one when my Honda powered Craftsman dies, but after 15 seasons it still runs great. I've even stopped doing oil changes the last few years ... :rofl2:

Just curious, what are the advantages of a electric powered mower over a gas powered one?  It's not like fuel and maintenance of a gas powered one is expensive.  Just curious is all.

Sorry for going OT, mmret.

Pure and utter laziness. I abhor mowing the lawn, there are so many other things I would rather do, so I let it it go sometimes and the reel mowers don't cope well with long grass.

regardless of the size of lawn I would get a  gas mower.   electric mowers don't have the power for the job, especially the rechargeable ones, gas are easier, more convenient and overall better for the job

I dunno.  For a really small lawn I think a cordless is fine.

No emissions.  No need to buy fuel.  No need to fill it (and spill gas everywhere).  No need to change the oil, plugs, starter rope.

You'd just plug in the battery and off you go. Presumably the batteries won't last forever but still.

I have a Toro gas mower that I paid $80 for 7 years ago.  It's going strong and needed no maintenance beyond oil changes.  My lawn isn't as big as it was (laid down mulch by the kids play structure and shed) and I could probably get by with a cordless model.

Plus, no cord to run over!

Dead quiet is nice too, especially when mowing later than I should be

I have had a Honda mower for 28 years. I think I have changed the oil once.

Lee Valley Tools.  We have an electric mower and a reel mower, and I love the reel from Lee Valley.  Stays sharp, works great, and is quiet and so easy to use.

have an electric mower - does the job fine as long as I dont let it get to be a jungle between mows

no emissions, low noise, zero maintenance, lots of power [pick one with lots of power?]

for the average suburban house, electric is more than enough

those push ones only work if you have a tiny lawn, they do only an OK job at best

Huh. How come I've never heard of this Lee Valley place until now. I must now browse their website.
