Windshield Cleaning
« on: September 09, 2017, 09:24:09 am »
I'm going to give my windshield a thorough cleaning this weekend.  I've watched a view videos on how to do it, but each has a small variation in the steps involved.

All vids start with using glass cleaner, then deviate from there.

What are this forum's suggestions for getting a clean windshield, to provide a smooth, no-bump ride for your wipers?   ;D

I bought this stuff for washer fluid and it's much better than the jugs. Especially at getting bugs off.

I was going to use it to clean the inside too.

Why not just use a glass cleaner?     Using newspaper instead of paper towel works great.

I've used Stoner's Invisible Glass for years.  I haven't found anything that cleaner better and is easier to use.

But, should a thorough cleaning include more than the usual cleaner?  I've seen citrus degreaser, razor blades, clay bar, steel wool, wax used.

If the usual cleaner isn't cutting it, yeah.

FWIW, I used the washer fluid then glass cleaner and it seems to have done the trick.

Also bought some Invisible Glass. It'll be useful for when the kids gum up the windows.

Get a bug/window sponge. It's a sponge with a mesh cover on it. I clean the window 1st with that using window cleaner then I clean it once more with towels and window cleaner.

Done.

Every spring I scrub outside of windshield with Vim Bathroom spray. It is white and creamy and has a vary slight abrasion to it. I find it cuts through the road film. I never get it on paint. Rinse off completely.

I then do a rain-X treatment.

For inside I also use Stoner's Invisible Glass.

X3.  There is only one answer to this question, and it's this.  I'm really chiming in to note that its pretty cheap in multi-packs at Costco.

The key, I think is using distilled water, rather then regular tap water.

Interesting point about the distilled water.

Does anyone have a solution for foggy windows?  For whatever reason, the inside of the windshield is ALWAYS fogged up in the Golf.  It clears quickly with a little defrost but once the temperatures start to fall I can see this being a massive pain.

I've used Rain X anti fog.  Seems to help.
Really?  I didn't find it helpful at all.  I tried it a few times with absolutely no luck.  I have a 3/4 full bottle sitting at my dad's place.

Mrs. Slow Lane bought some Ultimate cloths from the Shopping Channel. I use these and distilled water when cleaning the inside of the windows. Best thing I have ever used, no streaks, no chemicals.

The key, I think is using distilled water, rather then regular tap water.

I just wet the cloth with the distilled water, wring out, wipe window. I don't have to wipe it dry, as it will dry streak free.

Mr. Clean Magic Erasers work well on glass too!

Works very well for getting any film off the inside windows. Also great for removing black shoe scuffs on interior plastic..

I keep mine next to my rotary dial phone.
