Anyone in Mississauga have time to look at a Mazda 6 for me?
« on: January 17, 2024, 04:50:06 pm »
Anyone willing to look at this 2017 Mazda 6 for me? Just want to roughly gauge how much work it might require to pass OOPI. I wonder what the original owner did for work or whatever to put almost 60,000 km a year for 7 years.

Uber, Skipthedishes, some other independent courier job...  It does look to be in nice condition considering the mileage. I imagine it will be a tough sell with the mileage and manual transmission.

Dkaz, happy to have it PPI'd for you. We're at the Mississauga/Oakville border. Just have the guy send it to Clarkson Fine Cars and we can have a look-see.

Curious what the condition of the metal bits are underneath. That mileage? They are asking way too much.

Yeah it's REALLY hard to value cars with absurd mileage. On one hand, it looks fairly clean, and it's fairly new, and it's probably had a bunch of maintenance/repairs done over time... but also, it's unsellable to anyone ever with that kind of mileage.

I know the T word is a jokey thing around here, but we had a 2015 or so V6 TDI Touareg in stock last year. Thing was absolutely immaculate, every service record from Humberview VW, every option, Execline. Unfortunately, it had 208,000km on it. A number that starts with "2" will scare just about anyone, so forget anything with 3 or 4. The "yes it's super clean, BUT..." conversation is one I don't really like having. Higher mileage cars like this I'll only touch if I already have a home for.

It's basically Miled out.  I know it's a Mazda, and their drivetrains are pretty reliable.  But even a Mazda at 400 000kms HAS to be starting to approach the limits...

I would imagine a full cylinder compression and leakdown test would be mandatory before buying this car.

Big miles on any car, nevermind a 4 cylinder, at least it's a naturally aspirated unit. $3500 is the right price, at that price, you forget wasting time and money on PPI, compression checks, etc, you just roll the dice and see how far it'll take you. Putting a bunch of time, effort and money into thoroughly investigating the mechanical condition of a 400K km car isn't wise. Get it cheap enough that you don't have to care, or move on and find something else.

^ Agreed.  Nevermind that he has to get it from southern Ontario to Alberta assuming the vehicle is for himself (or are you in BC?).  I see the temptation, but I'd be looking for something local if you're going for a unit with that high mileage.  Minimize the "on the road" costs because its a gamble regardless of inspection.

Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

That's a lot of klicks, but then again lots of operating miles in a short time can be easy mileage for an engine as long as maintenance was kept up

Could see clutch and brakes possibly being issues, shame the carfax is locked, would be nice to see if any maintenance history or accident issues show up there

Interior looks very good for that amount of use, drivers seat hardly looks worn

There’s great value in high mileage vehicles for the right person. I find some put way too many eggs in the mileage basket, especially those shopping for inexpensive rides. Maintenance and use is most important, and I’d much rather have a maintained vehicle with 300,000 highway Km than something with 150k that’s had a life spent in the city stop and go.

A fleet I used to buy and sell to had two identical trucks both put in service the same day, and had the same maintenance protocol. One had 800,000 km and had a dedicated daily route from Calgary to Edmonton. The other had 340,000 km and never left the city. The repair history for the city unit looked like a telephone directory compared to the highway unit. Its overall condition was also far worse.

Given some wear on the passenger seat, I don't think it's an Uber car. Was probably a couple driven from like Hamilton to TO and back every day. With highway mileage it could still be a decent car but I agree, what they are asking for it is nuts.
Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach the man to fish and he wakes you up at 5 in the morning.

Hamilton to TO is a creep/stop and go parking lot.  The vehicle is shot.  People are beyond desperate for cheap vehicles in the GTA.  Eventually someone will get hooked by the the price and the financing and then will have nothing but a boat anchor to show for it.

Well isn't your glass always half full...  :P

Whoever bought that manual car for commute likely had to put up with little traffic, it could've been driven on 407 or off peak 400 series.

And BTW, I would put more trust in a high mileage car than an Uber one that magically shows 80k in 5 years.

Interesting choice in tire for a car with over 400k on the clock as well... Firestone Indy500, not exactly a commuter tire known for long treadlife...

So basically talk the price down enough and take a risk. It’s a 17 GT so it’s got all the bells and whistles I want, and I believe it was the final year the 6 came in a manual. It’s new enough I’m not concerned about Ontario rust. Also remember my vehicular history:

Ford Fiesta 326,000km
Mazda 5 334,000km
Toyota Matrix 400,000km
Toyota Sequoia 320,000km
Toyota Sienna 365,000km

The SkyActiv-G engines as long as they don’t have e cylinder deactivation are proving to be long lasting reliable workhorses. You can only get the naturally aspirated 2.5 now with cylinder deactivation which is a shame.

I'm curious if the 2.5 with cylinder deactivation is proven to have problems?  Mine is the second?!? model year that was equipped with it.
