Am I screwed?
« on: January 23, 2021, 11:01:48 pm »
Hi all,

Just a general question about how far up the creek I am.

I recently traded in my 2012 town and country as it was at 250,000km and needed a lot of repair on suspension, breaks etc... I traded it in for $3000 at a Nissan dealership and got a 2016 Rogue SV. I was aware that it had been in an accident with no structural frame damage. I had a gut instinct about buying due to the general managers pressure tactics, but ended up caving as I was getting no where near this offer on my van for a trade in (throw in $1500.00 off purchase of used vehicle and free studded winter tires to boot).

The rogue drove perfectly and only has 24,000km on it. Today I drove it in to work for the 3rd time since buying and the CEL came on. I plugged in my scan tool and seen a P2096 error for "Post Catalytic Fuel Trim System Too Lean Bank 1". Dealer had me sign a form saying there was no CEL at the time of signing (which there was not). To my horror came a slew of other codes that were stored.

Long story short, I should have scanned this before buying, but ignorance told me it was safe from a reputable dealer, and low kms. So this is my whining about not being thorough with a used vehicle purchase if even from a trusted dealership. Do I have a leg to stand on here, or do I have to suck up repair costs and everything else that my blue driver has listed?

If you were aware of there being a serious accident on it (including frame damage!), I'm not sure why you got it, considering how many 2016 Rogues there are on the market.

Was there a warranty implied at the time of purchase? Need a little bit more info here to go on.

it doesn't appear there was frame damage.

my suggestion would be to visit the dealership and let them know the CEL light is on and you were able to pull some codes from it...perhaps something they previously worked on isn't quite fixed right and they can get you back on the road quick and easy.
When you've lost the argument, admit defeat and hit the smite button.

The only legal recourse in Ontario is the Sale of Goods Act but good luck with that.  :P

Visit the dealer and tell them that you have a code showing.  DO NOT tell them that you attached your own reader to the ECM.  If they blow you off tell them you are going to file a complaint with OMVIC.   Then see what happens.

How long have you owned the Rogue? IE: Did this happen a week after you bought it or 6 months?

If you're lucky you just have a low battery, charge it and clear the codes, see if they come back.

Some dashes like to light up with problems if the battery is too low, I have to charge my Cayenne every week or so in the winter if my wife is just doing her regular 5 minute rides around town.

Our used Lexus was the same way, had a sh*t-ton of codes initially. The Jag dealer we bought it from sent it to Lexus and all they did was a scan and a clear, and it has been fine ever since

Researching things a bad or just low battery gives all kinds of random codes, oddly everything but low battery

After 6 months wurs has been fine so far, I'll probably add a battery pigtail for charging if I can figure out how to keep the vehicle settings when I loosen the battery connections

Sorry, I misread that.
