Intrigued by this one......

https://www.autotrader.ca/a/bmw/x3/montr%C3%A9al/quebec/19_12837450_/?showcpo=ShowCpo&ncse=no&orup=21_24_27&pc=L4H%203C9&sprx=-1&modalXS=1

Cons:
- black exterior
- QC
- higher km

That's not bad. Are any of the cons deal breakers?

In theory, if the maintenance and condition checks out, it wouldn't for the price, but needs more info and need to see the car.... Big ticket maintenance items done outweighs the higher mileage in my book. Add two sets of new Michelin tires on OEM wheels ($3000+ for tires alone) and it gets even better.

Looks real nice. 1st owner??? The house and property looks nice. Good reflection on owner of car. Private sale so you save some tax. High Kms would concern me. But ask owner about his driving. Maybe a lot of it was long distance highway cruising.

I tend to do a bit of "profiling" from the add and pictures.
The ad/pictures tell me a "well off car guy with affinity for sporty/performance German cars". Note the MK6 R in the background of one of the photos.
He's not buying flashy cars, but understated performance German cars.

The fact that he mentioned the Pierburg 100% aluminum water pump in the ad tells me he knows the car.... This is a "thing" for water pump on these cars. The OEM unit is a VDO which is aluminum/plastic (prone to leaks due to aging plastic side) . The Pierburg is an upgraded all aluminum option most "BMW guys" use for replacement.

Sounds like you need to have a conversation with the guy, car guy to car guy.  He would probably appreciate selling to another BMW enthusiast who knows what a Pierburg water pump is.

Hopefully he speaks English (or you, French).

The ad mentions reason for selling: getting a 2022 X3 M40i - yup, car guy.

Trying to think of options not already discussed here...just to cover all bases.

Mercedes-Benz GLK - compact, V6, but a bit older now

Subaru Tribeca - who remembers that? Getting old though.

Ford Edge - properly optioned, they can be ok https://www.autotrader.ca/a/ford/edge/newmarket/ontario/5_62287268_on20070704174645978/?showcpo=ShowCpo&ncse=no&ursrc=boost_hl&orup=5_14_663&pc=J4B%200A3&sprx=-1&modalXS=1

or its uptown cousin, the MKX https://www.autotrader.ca/a/lincoln/mkx/toronto/ontario/5_61319409_on20080611094525059/?showcpo=ShowCpo&ncse=no&ursrc=pl&urp=4&urm=7&pc=J4B%200A3&sprx=-1

...and, strictly based on the compact + V6, why not a https://www.autotrader.ca/a/dodge/journey/saint-basile-le-grand/quebec/5_62318251_20160205161142963/?showcpo=ShowCpo&ncse=no&ursrc=xpl&urp=3&urm=8&pc=J4B%200A3&sprx=-1&modalXS=1  :hide:

I looked at the GLK as I like the boxy body, but smaller than what I need/want.

The others are of no interest to me.

Yep, the dude must be well off too since those cost a good chunk of cash now that the I6 is only available in the high-end BMW trims for a hefty premium. Plus "... sur un coup de tête" - doesn't this mean something like "on an impulse" or similar?

LOL.... yeah, that's a detail for "connaisseurs". Another hint is the mention of "OEM valve cover".... there are cheaper aftermarket options but most are made in China. You don't want that part to be anywhere near subpar. "

Another one is "remplacés de manière préventive"..... my kind of guy  ;), which doesn't wait for a part to fail before replacing it. Not critical parts anyway.

Emailed the guy in Montreal with the black '16....

Anyone in Montreal willing to check it out for me in case it gets serious?

I just got some bad news today - the cancer (rust) is eating various underbody parts on the Outlander so I need to get serious.

Yes, for PPI I would use them. This is just for the preliminary visual inspection.

The price just dropped this morning to $12.9K. Now I'm really intrigued/interested, but the guy didn't get back to me and no other way to contact him but Autotrader message.

Maybe he doesn't like Ontario scammers....

Use the website, not the app - the French versions are so buggy your guy probably doesn't use it.

Have a look too at lespac.com (Trader-owned and QC-specific) and kijiji to see if it's listed there as well.

He might've switched to "all weather" as it looks like he has CC or similar now.

Nice unit but really don't want to go too old or too high mileage, unless there is proof big ticket items have been done right. I was trying to stay clear of a fixer upper for this one, aside from fluids, filters, belt, maybe spark plugs .... No breaks, no tires, no fixing interior/exterior.....

The black 16 is interesting because major items have been done.

A '17 Black/Brown with 91K just showed up close to me for $24K. Don't know anything about it but will check it out tomorrow.it's a dealer which I hate.....

I finally got in touch with the seller of the Montreal black '16 X3 35i with 177K km after I messaged him from AutoHebdo. Funny thing, the messages from Autotrader were going into his Trash. He thought there is no interest in his car hence he dropped the price to $12.9K this morning.

My message prompted him to check his Trash folder and he found emails from other shoppers. He jacked up the price this evening to $14.9K :)

He's not a car guy after all but he quoted from the invoices and perhaps what his mechanic told him. However, he said he did everything his mechanic (BM Workshop in Montreal) told him to do which is not a bad thing after all. He said he did some suspension work recently as well but he wouldn't know what it is. He's out of country till May 18 so will eventually find out more when he's back.

Car is black on black.... yuck  :hurl: ... but if it's at least Enhanced package (must), it was indeed well maintained and for the right price, I may still make an offer on it. Thinking $14K using the VMR Canada retail as reference and not too far off his current asking and above what he was willing to sell it for this morning.

I hate shopping for a used car with a gun at my head.

How?

The Outlander isn't in imminent danger of disintegrating tomorrow from what I read...

It's kind of does. The rust is eating various small parts...I took it in to replace the control arms and found a rotted transmission coolant pipe, small leak at the top of the fuel tank, leaking exhaust Y-pipe... The power train is solid but the rust related issues are getting worse and costly. Time to let go.

If I would've rustproof it annually since new it could've gone forever. I haven't had a single mechanical issue with it in 17 years and 265K+ km.
Body is not bad - minor bubbling on the rear fenders and inner side of the doors.
