Yeah, why not use a disc-guard?  And hey, they'd only be handmade out of carbon fiber and unicorn crap and cost $2000.

I don't think the pros care about how much things cost...
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

Exactly.  Which is why they'll be VERY expensive.

Disc guards?  Gear guards would have been nice on the day that I sliced a zipper into my calf after I hopped off when sliding down some mud.  It took almost a year for the grease to work itself out of the wound.

That's when I swore off MTB.  That bike is still for sale.

My bike has the same feature as our clothes dryer...

  Gear guards

She makes a good point.  What would happen to a knee that was thrust into a spinning gear set?

I'm guessing the same type of injury?

What about if you fall off and hit a bridge abutment?  Or pavement?  Or...

But, yeah, I get making the bike at least not mauling the rider...

Disc brakes have been used for years on mountain bikes and one crash much more often off road than on road. Never seen anything like that happen on a dirt bike crash???

Not as many guys in such a close pack usually though....so maybe that's why there's more concern?  Plus guys on dirt bikes wear tons of safety gear.  Cyclists not so much.

FFS already. Like the sport needed to lose any more credibility.

I'd love me one of those down tube motors.  Could have really used it yesterday while another guy and myself were chasing down the A group for 8 kms. And yes, we did catch them and yes it did hurt.

Guys, if I'm looking for a good beginner city bike (road + some offroad) with a max price of $600, is there a particular bike or set of bikes you can recommend?

I was looking at the Miele Preza XD hybrid (http://www.mielebicycles.com/1332-Preza_XD-hybrid-bike.html) which is on sale right now for $500 from a local shop.
