My offset on wheels is off by 10mm
« on: August 13, 2017, 01:45:12 pm »
On previous post I asked how to find and measure offset on wheels.

I measure the offset on the used set of winter tires a dealer sold me for my 2015 Kia Forte 5. The offset was 40. After that I found marking on rims confirming this. They are 16 X 6.5J ET40

According to the web site below the offset for this 16 inch wheel should be 50.

https://www.wheel-size.com/size/kia/forte/2015/

I would think this variance of 10mm in offset is really bad. I plan to go back to dealer and ask for my money back or a correct set of tires. I am right in demanding another set of wheels?

Thanks in advance

10mm isn't a huge amount. On some cars it makes little difference. Tough you say.

But if you want exact fit...see if the dealer still make it right.

Are the new wheels the same width as the spec OEM wheels?  This will affect the effective offset of the wheel. If those wheels are narrower by a full inch (25 mm) then the effective offset would be 40 + (25/2) = 52.5. Darn close to OE.  Also, as  rocket said, 40 is usually within tolerances for most cars.

Yes they are the same width. So there is a true 10MM variance.

Wheels they gave me      16 X 6.5J ET40

Some vehicles are very intolerant of offset issues because of clearance issues within the fenders.  On my TT, I can't go anymore than 10 mm w/o rubbing inside my fenders.  Also, esthetically you might not like the look.  40 mm offset will make the wheels "poke out" more.  Some like that look.  I'm not a fan.  Bring them back if you find them unacceptable.  It is your choice as a customer.

If nothing rubs I wouldn't worry about a 10mm offset difference.

That's how I feel.

But YMMV.

Good news. Went to dealer and they acknowledged they made a mistake. They apologized and offered me a refund. I said I was still open to them trying to get another set of rims and tires. They agreed. They said they will find another set for me to check out. If still not happy I can take the money.

They felt pretty bad about the whole thing. So I think they might bend over backwards to make me happy.

There are still some good people in the car business.

Good news.  At the end of the day you have to please yourself.  I assume you didn't like the look of the new wheels on your car?

It was the winter steelies I brought back. I love the alloys on the car.

I have a further question. I am now hunting for a 2nd hand set of winter tires and rims. The KIA manual does not have information about wheel offset for car. Can I rely on this web site to have correct info for the KIA Forte 16 inch wheel specs being 205/55R16 89T   6.5Jx16 ET50  5x114.3 Bore 67.1 MM
I can't seems to find any other source to validate this info.

https://www.wheel-size.com/size/kia/forte/2015/

I want to ensure the rims I buy have correct Bore and offset.

Thanks again. New car brings out a lot of questions. Sorry  :-[

The wheel dimensions including offset are often stamped on the inside of the wheel. Although the bore size is likely not included. You could always verify the bore diameter by measuring your existing factory wheels.

Any chance you can find a second set of factory wheels on kijiji to use during the winter?

As draghon mentioned, the offset (ET) should be stamped on the inside of the wheel.  As for the correct center bore, take a measuring tape with you when you look at any potential wheels.   A larger bore shouldn't be a problem, but there is a very good chance the smaller bore will not fit properly on your hub.

Factory OEM wheels are the safest and most convenient option IMO.
I can confirm 67.1 mm wheel bore for your Kia. Most Kia/Hyundai cars use it. Just make sure the offset is correct.
