Topic: Extended warranty - 2011 bmw 335

Hi there, just wondering what people's thoughts are on purchasing an extended warranty for a 2011 bmw 335 I xdrive coupe?  For three additional years on top of the factory warranty is about 3,500, assuming I drive about 60,000 over those three years.  The warranty would be from the used car dealer.

The only extended warranty I would buy for a BMW would be purchased from a BMW dealer.

I would not go that route personally because the only used car extended warranties that give me confidence are manufacturer CPO.

Remember, there is no such thing as no warranty...it's just self coverage.

Also, if the car has remaining factory coverage you should be able to buy extended warranty from BMW... yes?

I think I'd strongly consider the BMW extended warranty.....used car dealer warranty....no way. I think we'll probably buy one for our 3 series if we decide to keep it. Although, being a 328 with low annual mileage it's not an open and shut decision.

I think by MY2011 though I'd take my chances on skipping the warranty, even on a 335. Unless you have some really fancy eletronic gizmos (doubt it) you're likely better off finding a good indie and budgeting for a HPFP somewhere.

If it were a 328...even safer.

While you're not planning on purchasing that warranty, this thread is valuable for those that might be considering buying a used car warranty.  Factory/OE warranties offered by the manufacturers are usually comparable to the original coverage, but it's still worthwhile to read the fine print as various levels are offered for sale.  Non factory warranties are usually written in such a manner that you'll be lucky to ever complete a claim.

So, the usual advice around here is...

1. Do not buy any warranties that are not supplied by the manufacturer.
2. Read the coverage carefully to make sure that you're getting what you want.
3. Balance the cost of the warranty vs possible repairs.  Even a fairly expensive warranty can make a lot of sense on a complex German car, most of the time it's useless on a Corolla.

That's why BMWs sold non-CPO from non-BMWs dealers are generally less expensive. By a few grand - the cost of what the dealership later tries to sell you in its own "3rd party" warranty, for which they get a cut of the profits.

Personally, if the car's previous maintenance and the pre-purchase inspection was fine, I'd skip all together.

Re HPFP: For the 2011 model year, they switched from the twin-turbo engine to the mono-turbo with twin scroll and BMW also did a recall on the HPFP around that time. So not sure what the contribution of each was to reducing the HPFP issue, but it quieted down a lot afterwards. I followed the issue more closely when we still had the 335i, so up to 2013.

I would not be as concerned with a 2011 model. It's the 4th year EDIT: 5th year of the model cycle, and the first year of the mid-cycle refresh. Other than a potential HPFP issue, they were pretty well sorted by then.

Agree with mmret: Pocket that money yourself. As your own insurance. EDIT: With a FGC, you should have insurance one way or another. I'd just rather keep it in my own hands...

An IAP Superior warranty, assuming it has 40k on it now and inservice date of May1, 2011...

7 year 100  cost $1370
7 year 140  cost $1689.   They have a guaranteed price refund option, for an additional $250 if you don't use the warranty they refund $1500 at the end.  Give the guy a couple of C notes for margin, $2139 gives you coverage to 2018, if you don't use it it cost $639 for some piece of mind.

the extended warranty i bought for my Rio5 was $2k and doubles the full warranty from 5/100k to 10/200k...if i don't use it, i get cheque for $1000 or a $2000 credit towards a new Kia...as i've said in the other thread, i bought it more for piece of mind and to ensure i can get repairs done without a worry, but in the end, do what makes you feel most comfortable...there's nothing worse than spending $30k on a car and being terrified the entire time about worrying about some $4k repair issue that may be hanging over head.

Interesting. Costco also sells a warranty program, and at least there you have a huge name behind it that is known for (at least in my experience) standing 100% behind everything they sell.

I got a quote from Audi for platinum level coverage ext warrant and man is it egregious. It was $6k to go to 8yr/160k or something, and up to $11k for 10yr/200

Still, I would be quite wary of 3rd party warranties....are they really going to cover me if the adaptive cruise radar goes in the fancy FGC? Or the nightvision?

that's what i figured...i know most people harp about not buying extended warranties, but i usually buy them and often make use of them...in the case of my car, i often found things started to go wrong usually in years 7-8, so this way i would be covered...as well, if i decide to sell the car around that time, the new owner will have a full 2-3 years of warranty...something that would normally be non-existent in a car of that car elsewhere (meaning it should be easier to sell my car and i can get more for it).
