The Volga resurfaces!
« on: April 13, 2018, 02:14:58 pm »
I remember my Dad bundling my Sister and I up and taking us to the Toronto Boat Show one early Spring  - I had to be all of 4 or 5 years of age around 1963 or so. It was my first introduction to such an event and it was fascinating time for me. Amongst all the shiny new boats that were there on display there were a few memorable things - my Sister and I got hoisted up and into the seats of an Argo 6 wheeler ATV that was floating in a portable swimming pool and then walking past a Volga Hydrofoil. What stood out to me the most were the shiny, polished hydrofoils under the hull and how they appeared to me to be great gleaming knives and  how I would not want to be anywhere near this boat when it was in the water.
The things you remember as a kid.

Do you realize that in about 30 (updated as requested) years, we'll have millions of old ladies running around with tattoos?

Had no idea these existed. Cool.
On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Wow.  Never heard of them.

57 mph seems like it would be kinda scary in that thing.

Originally designed as a fast, rugged river patrol boat, the Volga 70 was produced in armed, unarmed, open and closed configurations and remained in production in Russia though the late 1970s.

So in other words, built like a tank for the water.  Looks like they did a great job on the resto as well.  Be interesting to see how well it compares to a conventional hull at speed.  The foils must have a heck of a lot less drag when up on plane.

Never knew these existed. Very cool.  Thanks for posting.

Yep! Foils have less drag.

Smaller total surface area than a hull bottom.

Guy I knew had a foiling sail boat...and it was incredibly fast!

It's called a Hobie Tri Foiler. Check out videos and see how fast it is.
How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

I was totally thinking that GAZ had released a new one of these...
