Mix and Match Tires
« on: May 08, 2023, 09:09:06 am »
This isn't something I'd normally do, but yesterday my wife smoked a pothole and now there's a massive bulge in the front left tire. The fronts are older, 2015, so not the end of the world since they were due for replacement.

The rears are from 2018, with lots of tread left. Both are Pirelli P7 A/S+.

I can't find those models any more, but I can get two P7 A/S 3's in the same size/load index/speed rating as the rears.

Anyone see an issue with this?  Or should I just bite the bullet and replace all 4?

I've mixed and matched before with no ill effects.   I'd do it.

Yeah, it sounds like those tires are similar enough for it not to matter.

Mixed and matched here too with no problems on RWD and FWD vehicles

Think the one that is a problem is Subaru with full time AWD

You're fine to mix & match like that, done it many times.

As was pointed out above, one of the issues with mixed tires is AWD systems.  Some are very sensitive to tire diameter.

The other issue is emergency situations.  Vehicles tend to pivot around odd tires in emergency maneuvers - and the more odd the tire, the more severe this pivoting will be.

I've bought plenty of cars with mis-matched tires, never had a problem, but the difference in appearance drives me nuts so I've always replaced them with a matched set. From a practical standpoint though, you should be fine. As others have called out, might be a different story if you had an AWD system to worry about.

You might get lucky and find a matching mismatch on Kijiji or FB.

I agree. You might find a deal on 4 matching tires and that way your ready for 2 more blowouts!!!  ;D

I have purchased a set of 4 in the past under similar circumstances. This is when it pays to have relatively popular tires on your car. Makes it easier to find a 2nd hand set.

There were a couple of used options but they would have had me buying new tires in a year or two.

It's just another piece of rubber on an older vehicle.  You must have better things to spend resources on?

The mismatch would drive me nuts and compel me to replace all 4, but it's not like the car will me meaninfully compromised in any functional sense.

Yeah, since they are both Pirelli P7's I don't think it will bother me.

I just bought two used tires for my Cayenne, the rears were worn quite a bit more than the fronts (probably that control arm issue last year) and I didn't want to buy a whole new set.  Yesterday I saw on marketplace that someone nearby was selling two of the exact tire, so I bought them.  Only difference I found is they are build in Germany, mine were built in USA.  Eagle LS2

225/4517's?

Not worth driving from Ottawa to Montreal for new tires!
