Yeah who waits a month for insurance?  Like I called on a Monday morning at 9am and by 9:30am I was riding my bike insured.

So, basic insurance on a new KTM 390 Duke is $737/year with my discount applied. For the Duke 690? $2655, including my discount of $615.

As soon as the engine capacity creeps over 400cc, we get nailed here. The Honda CB500X would run $1600/year. That's nuts.

The local dealer has leftover Duke 390 and RC390. They seem entertaining.

They also had a Duke 690, so I was curious what the difference in insurance would be. I didn't expect that.

Take Dukes for a spin and report back.

Yea, that's a crazy difference in insurance.

And people think ICBC are crooks. I pay $705 a year for my CB300F, going with something like a 690 Duke would cost me under $1300 full liability, comprehensive, and collision. Something like a  Hayabusa would cost me $2400 a year and plus have the option of insuring the liability portion for only 3, 6, and 9 months a year (comprehensive and collision is full year for storage purposes) for $920, $1400, and $1920 respectively. The same for the smaller bikes but meh I keep liability on my bike year round to take advantage of the odd January riding day.

It can be hard to even find an insurance company in Ontario that will insure a Hayabusa, or any higher powered sport bike for that matter.

Basic coverage on my KLR runs me $435/year.

As above, the SGI rates are:

Duke 390     $737/year
Duke 690  $2655/year

Also noticed the local dealer has a leftover 2017 690 Enduro R. The SGI rate for it:

690 Enduro R $1600/year

As far as I know, the Duke and Enduro share the same engine, but different tune. Certainly not enough to justify the $1000/year difference.

Meanwhile in Alberta, I’m expecting to pay $600 a year for a 600 and a scooter.

I think I'm paying about $2,800 all in for all three bikes. (FZ-09, RC51, and CRF250L), it should come down next year on the RC51 when I've had my M license for 5 or 6 years.

I don't understand why you can't just sign something saying that no one else is riding them, so they only need to insure one at a time out on the road.  It's ridiculous.

When I move to Alberta, it's going to be like insuring two bikes for the price of one.

So, TD Canadatrust Meloche Monnex now sucks a$$.

So, again Meloche Monnex sucks big time in the service department.

I called them today, as I'll be getting my bike Friday. State Farm, for reasons rust have anyways mystified me, aren't small bike friendly...premiums are scarcely more for bigger bikes.

Anyways...Meloche is significantly cheaper..$300 year cheaper.

Not sure if I should switch given the BS you're talking about.

Bit of a long story about off-road insurance...

We've planned an Alberta dirt bike ride in McLean Creek mid June.  KTM525 warned me about making sure bikes are insured.  Problem is in SK, you can't plate an offroad vehicle (only snowmobiles), which is how you typically get insurance here.  So you have 3 options; get bikes insured through home insurance, through a package policy that your vehicles are under (either SGI or Sask Mutual Insurance (SMI)), or a third party called Got Toys.  First two options won't insure underage riders for liability, unless they are 12-15 riding 50cc or less (when does this occur?), and the third option requires under age riders to pass a safety course, inspect bikes, and the cost is double of the other options.

Before I knew all this, I went to a broker 2 weeks ago and asked about dirt bike insurance.  They said they could provide me with insurance through SMI but I'd have to move one of my vehicles over, as you just can't have bikes under the policy.  No problem, I moved all vehicles over just for simplicity, gave the riders and bikes info, and got the insurance, including liability.  Now all my buddies have gone to get insurance and they're being told that you can't get liability on underage riders unless you go through Got Toys.  I had a close read of my policy, and sure enough, there's a clause that limits liability to riders 16 and older, unless they are 12-15 riding a bike 50cc or under.

So, looks like trip may be off.  I've got paperwork showing the kids bike is insured, however technically if he's riding it, there's no liability.  The other families aren't sure which direction to go so we're gonna meet about it this weekend.  Chances are the popo in Alberta won't check the policy for underage disqualifiers, but who knows.

What a :censor: show.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

^ Wow, that sucks. I had no idea.

Still, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Chances are, nobody will even ask, and if they do, I'm sure just showing the piece of paper will be fine.

Not even sure what the liability insurance is all about, anyway. What happens if your kid crashes into another kid while you're riding in Sask or any other province where there's no such thing as liability insurance for dirt bikes?

^You're probably right Heli, not much to worry about.  My opinion is that the others get the insurance and we go ahead with the trip.  As far as the kids riding in SK, then ya, no insurance.  So the risk is no higher riding in Alberta.
