MINI COOPER WRONG VIN
« on: March 24, 2018, 03:30:39 pm »
Bought a  2015 mini cooper with 14 months warranty in Quebec from a Hyundai dealership   A week after  I got it home was informed that the VIN number was wrong (10 Mini Coopers were sent to Canada with wrong VIN numbers in 2014)  Have learned that because of wrong VIN the car is a 2014 not a 2015 and now no warranty   Have learned that was traded in at Mini Cooper, sold to a broker who both knew about the issue  The broker sold it to Hyundai.  Wont take the car back unless I pay them depreciation or will give me a very small amount of money for compensation   I am in another province and dont want to spend $5000 to fight this   It actually seems illegal/fraudulent   Any thoughts on what i should do.

The car is still legal right?  In other words the VIN on the vehicle matches the VIN on the ownership?

If so, in practical terms, you are SOL.  I'd keep this info to yourself and pretend it never came to your attention as me thinks you will be wanting to trade/sell it in a few years.

The VIN issue has nothing to do with the province if it's a manufacturer issue as it seems to be. Consumer protection agency should be able to give out some advice.

If the Hyundai dealership gave you 14 month warranty, then it applies from when you bought the car, doesn’t it?  What does your paperwork say?

My take is that the manufacturers warranty has expired.

Listen ppl, the OP is SOL.  No one is going to return his money, extend his warranty.  Hopefully it's a better built MINI than previous years and it's not a problem.

Buy a wholesaled Mini from a Hyundai store in Quebec because of the "price" and you get what you pay for.  :P

My take is that the manufacturers warranty has expired.

But that has nothing to do with the model year unless the warranty was different in 2014 vs. 2015.

Yes. The warranty is counted from the time the car was sold/registered with the first owner, NOT from the model year.

Which is fine, but what does the paperwork say?  If the seller states 14 months warranty, then the seller has to honour it.

It likely says something like "remaining factory warranty", which would leave them in the clear if they misrepresented how much warranty was left at the time of the sale.

I agree with what was stated earlier, buying a used Mini from a Hyundai store in Quebec because it's a bit cheaper is a one way ticket to issues.  You get what you pay for.

And apparently we’ll never know what the paperwork actually says, so there’s no point in commenting further.

New car warranty starts from the date of first retail delivery....doesn't matter what year the car is. Something is off about this story.
