Honda Civic very expensive to insure?
« on: March 24, 2017, 06:50:40 pm »
I keep hearing that the Honda Civic is disproportionately expensive to insure and don't know why? I'm thinking of buying an 2013 Accord Coupe, but I wonder if I would hit with disproportionately expensive insurance on the Accord Coupe?  I would be interested to know why the Civic is so expensive to insure???

Call your agent for a quote, but I don't think the Accord is tarred with the same brush as the Civic.

And when I had my Civic, it was right up there on the list of most stolen vehicles in Canada. That was a big reason for the higher rates.

Not sure how close they are.  But the Accord coupe is quite expensive to insure as well, it was like $350 per year more than the sedan when I looked a few years ago, and the sedan was $200 more than my Mazda6.

I think small cars often have higher rates as you're more likely to suffer injury. Just physics really.
You can't just have your characters announce how they feel.

My insurance brokers say, higher rates, due to newer drivers.  Typically a younger driver gets a compact, not a mid size sedan.

In SK (gov't insurance), yearly premiums are (no discounts or penalties applied):

2017 Civic sedan = 1400 per year
2017 Civic coupe = 1543
2017 Accord coupe (4-banger) = 1547
2017 Accord coupe V6 = 1668
2017 Accord sedan (4-banger) = 1323
2017 Accord sedan (V6) = 1396

These premiums are maybe a little higher than competing vehicles, but not drastically so.  But I'm guessing private insurance premiums will have a lot more variance in rates than gov't insurance, which at least in SK is fairly homogenous.

I pay $786 for the Mazda6 (I am the primary), $815 for the Entourage (my wife).  If the price was much closer, I would have strongly considered the V6 Accord.  Around $4500 more to lease over 4 years, $3300 more to insure over 4 years.  Still very happy with my decision.

You cannot compared insurance price from one province to another
You do not know how much medical coverage there is, does SK have the same min amount like Ontario ?

For reference, late last year I asked my insurance company for quotes:

Civic hatchback Sport- $791
Hyundai Elantra (mid level trim) - $809
Honda CR-V EX - $776

I mentioned that I heard that Civic rates were usually higher to the insurance CS and she said nope.

I didn't.  Just seems that way, as it's in the same section.  As I stated earlier, the Accord sedan was over $350 more a year to insure in Ontario, the coupe even more (about $500 more a year).  So instead of $3300, I meant $2000 more over 4 years.

I was curious so I looked up some competitors:
2017 Cruze LS Turbo sedan = $1250
2017 Focus SE sedan = $1396
2017 Mazda 3 GS sedan = $1400
2017 Sentra SV sedan = $1323
2017 Jetta 1.4T sedan = $1297

Another thing I hated about my Mazda3 was its stupidly high insurance premium. Despite living in a jurisdiction with some of the nation's lowest (state-regulated !) rates , it cost me about as much as what you guys quoted below, something around 1.200 $US.  >:(

The Golf would have been about a hundred less per annum.

That is pricey. I only pay $1400 CA despite government insurance here.
