Updated! 06' 330i Replacement?
« on: September 17, 2016, 09:21:44 pm »
My dad got a very good offer for his 2006 330i. Its got about 115 km and has been mostly trouble free except for a few FGC quirks.

Now, he doesn't really know what to get if he wants to sell it. His budget is $35k.

Wants:

-Luxury/premium interior
-Sedan
-AWD
-Sporty handling (no luxury barges)
-At least somewhat reliable
-Less than 55km

Right now he is most interested in a 2013-2014 Acura TL SH-AWD Tech. He doesn't seem too thrilled about turbo 4 bangers like a 328/A4.

Any suggestions?  ???

For sporty ride Lexus IS350 AWD comes to mind. Not sure about the $$.

Also Infiniti G37X, some have sport package. NA, non-DI engine, hydraulic steering and a sweet exhaust note. 2013 is the last model year.

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach the man to fish and he wakes you up at 5 in the morning.

The Lexus or the Acura.

Otherwise just keep the last of the great BMW's.

Or get a newer one before they went all turbo and electric steering.

IS350 AWD is really nice but its still a tad expensive right now. Used Lexuses are facking priced like gold.

The G37X is a beast, however, it is very hard on fuel and it looks dated (then again, hes considering a TL...).  :P

 :rofl2: Tesla. He wishes.

He can actually get a TLX in his price range, however it does not drive as sporty as the TL, and that 9 speed auto is irritating.

Keep the 330i.

In our experience, it's hard to go to another brand after driving a BMW.

In 2014, my parents sold my prior 2004 X3 with 285k to relatives in New York City. I got an update over Labour day: They love it more than their 2010 Acura MDX which they bought new years ago.

With that budget he can't be considering new.
My thoughts about reliability and re-sale value is to look very carefully at Genesis G70 which
requires a few months wait.
Here is what attracts me ( some assumptions here by me )
>will launch with 48 volt system ( an onslaught of these will be launched next year--including BMW; Audi ( already have ); Mercedes ( new S Class 2017 is their first ) mild hybrid but minimum 10% improvement
in l/100 kms and more torque urban driving.  This will make 4 cylinder turbo the way to go.
>exclusiveness.
>hoping AWD available early right after RWD only first models.
>I am un-BMW

What? I see the for as low as sub $20s...But with higher mileage than what your dad wants

You do know it's been available since 2011...

He should easily be able to find one within his price range

EDIT I just checked...several within his price bracket

Meh.  BMW makes plenty of pedestrian cars, and other makes produce some amazing cars.  It all depends.

Infinity and Lexus both bested that year/generation of 3 Series in various reviews.

But yes, if you don't care about performance and brand whoring means a lot to you, yes...it's hard to get away from BMW

He loves his 330i. Silky smooth 255 HP I6 (which was available for 2006 only), hydraulic steering, perfect stance...but he's afraid of a catastrophic FGC failure that will cost him $$$$.

Genesis - luxury barge. Poor resale.
Fusion Sport - Sure it has power, but it lacks the premium feel.

He'd want the current generation - which brings it to above $35k for a used one with decent mileage.

Saw several within the current generation in his price range. But I'm in Ontario.

The E90 is generally solid. Provided proper maintenance and care is done, there isn't a ton that will leave you on the side of the road.

The cost of another car will pay for many repairs.

A risky proposition: a Caddy ATS? Not overly reliable according to CR, IIRC but they should have depreciated well which should leave enough dough for repairs. Many reviewers referred to it as a new 3 series in terms of handling and sporty feel.

What about a Q50?

The wife and I have been loving ours so far after 15 months of ownership.  Just figured I'd throw it out there as it meets your Dad's budget.

Btw, over the course of the last 15 months, it's averaged 10.6L /100 KMs on a mix of highway/city driving.  Not bad at all IMHO for a 328 HP sedan.
