So there's shooting in this?

Some years ago while I was in competitive shooting, was asked to consider "mountain bike biathlon" which was shooting and mountain bike riding in lieu of the skiing part.

I think John means a duathlon.
Which event is it John so we can follow along the day of?

Drove out to the western province of Rheinland-Pflaz (Rhénanie-Palatinat) for another 45km tour. Didn't plan a route, just went where the roads and occasional bike route took me.

It's weird. I'm warming more to the Rheinland over Bavaria. Less attitude, and there's so much more beauty when you're rolling around on a bicycle @30km/h versus in a car or motorbike @90km/h. I'm familiar with the beautiful wine région but this was my first time exploring it on bike, and I loved the lack of traffic, rural nature, and of course, vineyards (don't care much for the wine if I'm honest).

I'm curious as to what you mean here.

Will try to keep the thread on topic, but it has a lot to do with history and regional pride.

Bavaria is like the Texas of Germany. It's the wealthiest part of the country, conservative, and proud of its traditions- and its political party is threatening to dismantle the government right now. Literally. The folks believe they're always right and any other way is wrong. Even if they can't speak proper German  ;D

Rheinland-Pfalz is just an agglomeration of communities cobbled together after the World War, mostly rural. It doesn't have a particularly strong cultural emphasis aside from winemaking. Actually it doesn't have a lot of people, period. I like the simplicity of things there (my friend lives there) and the wide-open spaces and hills. Rode all afternoon and rarely had any cars drive by me, stopped at one of many Italian restaurants in a smaller town and had a meal and wine for cheap.

Think of it as the difference between say, the GTA and the Maritimes.

Oops, yes, duathalon!  No shooting involved.  And it's not a formal event, it's one that I've organized with a group of friends.  It's not difficult by any means.  It's an out and back.

Stage 1 - bike 7.5km with 220M of gain
Stage 2 - Run 16km with 950M of gain
Stage 3 - Run the 16km back to the bikes
Stage 4 - Bike the fast and fun 7.5km back to the cars.

The bike section is not very technical, only a few really rough bits.  There are stretches where you can really hammer on the way out, which really makes the end of the event a lot of fun.

Great pics and looks like a nice place to ride.

I thought the bike section was suppose to be much longer than the run? Your idea is CRAZY!

 :rofl2:

I do a few of these, and the runs are always a LOT longer than the bike sections.  We just use the bikes to get over the flat/fast/boring sections.  Though on this one, the bike section could hardly be described as "fast and flat"  - I thought I was going to break my poor bike...

Went for my first bike ride in nearly four years.  Slow and easy was the rule.

Another weekend in Germany means another afternoon on the bike in the Rheinland (sadly lost the lust for the motorbike on public roads). A 44km loop from Saulheim over to St-Johann, Spendlingen, over to Albig, then back to the car. Man, the scenery feels like the Tour de France, just awesome.

I'd go further if I didnt run out of water and time.

45 to 50km is a good distance for me. I feel like I've done a real ride but not completely exhausted myself.

Great pics!

I was disappointed today's group ride was only 75K as I thought it was going to be 100K, oh well. With the harder than normal efforts (for a Sunday ride) it made up for the shorter distance.

My legs are quite sore today. Not painful, but sore. Will probably top it off with some lap swimming after work today.

It's surprising how quiet and beautiful surroundings can really perk up a cycle ride- and the inverse is true, traffic and crowds can frustrate. It's like "oh man, I could ride and look at this all day........". Plus despite the sun, there was a nice breeze (note the windmills) as usual so that helps. Wish there was a way to easily carry more than just a bottle of water though, it really isn't enough for more than 2h.

Don't you have two bottle holders on your bike?  You could also add something like this for more.

I installed just one on the down tube.
