"The name Qashqai comes from a nomadic Persian tribe that seasonally traversed the tough terrain that is now Iran, traveling with their flocks from highland to lowland pastures"

Funny, I just started reading the book "Operation Long Jump" about the German plot to assasinate the Allied leaders meeting in Tehran during WW2.  The Germans were allied with the Qashqai and used them to try to dislodge the British and Russian occupation of Iran.  Up until now I have never heard of them.

Dumb name for a car though!

More to that, the name unequivocally resembles the Russian word Qaqashqa which means POOP or a piece of SH1T. :) Interestingly, it has been sold an marketed in Russia for years now, and guess what - people buy it. Strange, eh?

The fancy Volkswagens are out, Volvos are not my cup of tea and the two Subarus are miled out, rust buckets from the Maritimes.  ;D So JDM market it is.

The Subaru (there's only one) is a California car, has only been in Canada since 2015.

Maybe Nissan is hoping the Qashqai is a cash cow.

I have read that it is called Rogue Sport in both US and Canada.  I actually like the size of this car and the design is no worse than most any other SUV.

And where would I find this awd, manual sport wagon outside of importing a JDM Subaru Legacy???

Golf :Pty

Consumer Report doesn't recommend the Golf or any VW vehicle other than the Tiguan anymore because of poor reliability.  More likely, it's the poor reputation VW has garnered for itself, though.  Diesel was never offered on the Tiquan.

Nissan.ca lists as the goofy name:

Could not find a better place to put this info.  I own 2018 qashqai s manual transmisson.  Good vehicle with the following exceptions.  You can not get cruise control on this model, not even an aftermarket kit available.  The six speed transmission is geared to low 2750rpm at 100kmph.  I can slow down in sixth gear to 60 and speed up to highway speed without lugging the engine.  I don't know rpm on the cvt but on my sentra it was about 1800 at 100kmph.  This is the reason for poorer mileage on the manual.  This makes no sense unless you like shifting gears for no reason. This gearing is similar to my 86 suzuki samurai with 5 speed transmission 1.3l engine with 63hp.  Seems like they just slapped a transmission in it with no thought.  I went to the standard transmission because my 2014 Senta transmission cvt failed at 125000km,  $5000 repair, with no warranty. My brothers 2012 Altima cvt also went but was still under warranty.  I WOULD REALLY DO SOME RESEARCH ON NISSAN CVT HISTORY BEFORE PURCHASING ONE, there is a lot to read.
