What mileage did you first change the oil?    BTW  on the vehicle. Just saw the thread now.

I haven't done an oil change yet, it says it's not due until 10k miles or 1 year

Germans have been fanatical about conserving oil since their butt kicking in WW2.  It's a brand new engine that has little bits all thru it that wear off and need removing.  The 10K km limit is only there to meet EPA standards.

Please, just change it now and send the bill to Ron.  He is a true oil officiant.

It has an oil filter? I assume there is a lot less break in bits, the Germans know how to machine. This is not a dirty GM or Hyundai.  ;D

This is a frequent debate on the Porsche forums, but I don't see the point of doing one when Porsche says it's not needed

Yeah, this is a big topic when it comes to bore scoring as well & the oil weight. If you're planning on keeping it for a long while I'd just change the oil every 6 months, no matter the mileage. Just to be safe down the road. I'm sure you've come across that on the Porsche forums.

I expect I'll be keeping this one for years, I can't think of anything comparable (or coming on the horizon) that would make me even consider for a second replacing it.

Wait 'til you drive a new Macan EV.  ;)
Hard, hard pass.

Why?
An EV when Porsche has some of the best sounding ICE on the planet?

No thanks!

You really need to drive one. It's even got sounds too.  ;)

Are we leasing?  All jokes aside I would do an early one when new and then if using a quality oil and not wringing it out hard or taking 1000's of 5min trips you will be fine for the year.

Don't forget, this is what Porsche (and other OEMs) say because of maintenance packages available for purchase (or free in many cases), saving them money on what they have to do for you complimentary. By the time any long term damage occurs you're well out of warranty period and they'll gladly tell you to pound sand.

BMW was notorious for this; N20 cars (2012+ "28i" 2.0T motors) had 1Y/24,000km oil change intervals because they included a free 4 year maintenance pack. Those cars were blowing up left right and centre, until they did away with the N20 altogether around ~2016 and replaced with the improved B48.

With what we regularly see with V6 Macans, I'd strongly recommend an oil change every 6 months or 6K, but that's only IF you're planning to keep it long term and not lease. Just cheap insurance. This is coming straight from the mouth of my in-house Porsche tech.

I'd do one after the initial "break in" period.

As other have pointed out,  these long intervals seems to be just to reduce the maintenance costs, especially if the manufacturer is paying for the first few years under a maintenance agreement.

Are these cars even using smart an oil life monitoring? I know Honda and GM use oil life monitoring which monitors drive cycles, engine temp, speeds, idle time etc to calculate oil change intervals. I have a feeling that Porsche doesn't and it is just a fixed interval reminder system similar to other German brands. I guess the definitive test would be to do an oil analysis and see how the oil is holding up.
