First X5 warranty claim
« on: November 21, 2019, 07:33:07 pm »
Not really whining or moaning as the X5 just turned 3 a couple of days ago (I've had it about 21/2 years) but I had my first issue today. The soft close on the driver's door started making a stuttering noise. Turns out the motor is stripped. Replacement on order but it means another trip to Moncton.  :-\

Wait, what?  Not a window regulator or motor?  ARE YOU SURE?  C'mon, that's pretty much the first thing to break on every BMW.

Has it already been 2 1/2 years?  Seems like only a couple of months ago you were shopping for it.  Man how time flies.

Seems pretty reliable up until now, anyway, at least compared to your ML.  What's the consensus going to be?  Is this one you'll drop at the 4 year mark, or keep driving longer?

Probably keep it for awhile as things stand. I like it and I negotiated a 2/80 warranty extension when I made the deal.

Probably cheap plastic.

Sent from my BLA-L29 using Tapatalk

When MB introduced the mono-wiper on the W124 and W201, it was a very robust device.  The gears took a beating in order to give the wiper the concentric pattern to sweep more of the glass, so it was made of very stout brass.  Then they started cutting corners, and starting with the W202, the gear set was made of pretty crappy plastic.  The gears would strip and you'd have to buy a $2K assembly from MB.  I kept finding more and more crap like in the C-Class I owned, and it was those things that had me sell it.

Fun and games until the accountants get a hold of it. 90s Toyota Camrys were a good example. Every new model was cheaper and cheaper.   Back to the BMW; Soft close doors? Drivers can't swing a door?

I know. That's such a superfluous feature in a car, especially a daily-driven car like X5.
It MIGHT make sense in a Rolls-Royce, but not in a car that usually gets driven every day.

Was one of the options I thought it was really silly too. Until I had it in my LS.

One of the options I miss.

Yeah. I can see it being one of those features you mock until you've had it. Like a heated steering wheel.

And with mainstream cars being so refined the luxury marques need to differentiate themselves, so no surprise the X5 has that feature.

Our GS350 has a soft close trunk lid and I use it more than the auto button.   I got into the habit of using soft close mostly to make sure the connector cable for the trailer hitch stays flat as the lid closes.  Power close is optional though and you can close it like a regular door as well.  I would assume the X5 doors work the same.

Can’t count the amount of times somebody has mentioned that I didn’t close the trunk lid properly. A couple of people came over to push on it just as it started to latch, which just drives me.  That’s the only irritating part.  :P

On the doors, you just gently close the door...and the motors finish the job.  No effort, no slam, no noise.

I liked it.

Oddly, our Mazda 5 had auto latching on the sliding doors.  Kinda sticks out since the rest of the car was decidedly not luxury.

I loved that feature. It was only on the first gen GT, they removed it in the second gen.

Can I point out that my 2004 Lexus has 292,000km on it and all four soft-close door actuators/motors are working perfectly? Actually, five, because the trunk is soft close too.

It's fine if it works every day.  Like the soft-close trunk my dad's '88 Caddy had.  It worked every day until we drove it to the ground.  Of course, a trunk lid does not get used as often as a driver's door would.
