Really? I don't find that at all.

To me the Atlas looks fine. I do like that it looks like an actual SUV, sort of along the lines of the previous generation Pilot.

BTW, Volkswagen yesterday confirmed that they will build a smaller five-passenger Atlas. A concept version debuts at the NY auto show next month.

What? They're building a smaller-than tiguan cuv thing and a bigger than tiguan but smaller than atlas cuv thing?

Once 3D printing takes off we'll be able to order VW cuv with the dimensions of our choosing it seems....

A smaller Atlas would wander very close to Tiguan territory, no ? Especially considering that in Europe, they are getting a 7-seater Tiguan. I struggle to understand VW's strategy in this segment.

One of my colleagues has an Atlas. Sort of a mid-trim level. It's not bad, but not great. Fit and finish is OK, but not great. I guess it is kid-proof, and the faux leather will be easy to clean.

His trim level doesn't have the electric tailgate or navigation.

A smaller Atlas would be more of a Murano/Edge/Grand Cherokee competitor. And it would offer a V6, unlike the Tiguan.

I like the looks of the Atlas ,  I think  the GC is the best looking jeep out there

The 2.0t FWD version is quite a bit faster than the VR6...

VW needs to drop the V6 and put the 2.0T in there that's in the Q7.  That's all this CUV needs.

VW might be keeping that option for the upcoming Touareg.

I agree that the Atlas would benefit from a little more power. The V6 does struggle to move all that metal and the Atlas is not what I would call peppy off the line.

What's happening under that V6 badge here?

https://youtu.be/Cx3hSAHrytw?t=59

I'm also confused about the overlap in models, but whatever...choice, or something.  I'm not sure the winter driving footage provided by VW inspires a ton of confidence, but like the Lexus RX's "OK" winter performance, this will be more than adequate.

Amazing videos as always, Pritch!

I think the biggest issue is exactly that - peppy off the line, so more torque please!
Somehow the Honda Pilot generates about the same amount of power but it feels a lot faster than the Atlas.

I'm pretty sure the Touareg is dead and there won't be another generation.  The 5 seater Atlas will take it's place in that small category (Jeep GC, Ford Edge, Nissan Morano).

The Tiguan you speak of is the one that North America gets.  They have a shorter/smaller version of the Tiguan that we don't currently get.

The 2019 Touareg is coming my friend, you better believe it. Although it probably won't have that 2.0T engine but rather a standard V6 and a hybrid.

Only in NA. A new Touareg is debuting this year for other markets.

You are correct about the Euro Tiguan, it is the shorter version.

After that was published VW announced that the Touareg was canceled in North America so I wouldn't hold my breath.

I wasn't aware. Interesting... I would have thought the North American market was where it would sell best... But it makes sense for VW to offer us North Americans the lower end Atlas, as a replacement, I guess.
