the Ford plant near here was important as well, as it produced a variety of vehicles for about 4 decades, most recently, the Crown Victoria (as well as Mercury Grand Marquis and for a short time, the Lincoln Town Car)...the Crown Victoria vehicles were not only a fairly common full size car for North American families, they were also a staple in the taxi and police services.

either way though, the article was very interesting with lots of new information i didn't know about...great read.

Bell Canada buys its first motorized vehicle, an Ontario-built Tudhope, on April 11. When an employee comes to pick it up, Tudhope first teaches him how to drive. The engine blows up on the way home. Someone is sent to rescue him sometime between 9 am and 3 pm

some good stuff in there... couple comments/questions...

was that seriously PEI's slogan?

the 600 avg price of a car vs 1000 avg wage is about the same as now.... avg car is about 28k iirc and avg income is about 48 i think... pretty close to the same %. only difference is that you had to save over half a years wages to buy one then, now you just have to give up 30% or less of your monthly income and pay it as you make it.

Thomas Wilby and F.V. Haney become the first to drive from Halifax to Vancouver. It’s a tough trip because there are few roads, and Canadians lobby for a Trans-Canada highway. The federal government gets right on it. The highway officially opens in 1962, and is finished in 1970.

The TransCanada made it easier to cross Canada as one continuous route but there were many highways before then. And even though it still exists, there are parts where it is not the most direct route. Highway 17 between Thunder Bay and Kenora is the preferred route for example as is the Coquihalla Hwy 5 in BC.

Prince Edward Island becomes the first province to put a slogan on its licence plates, adopting the snappy “Seed Potatoes and Foxes.”

When NB wanted to update their plate slogan, they had a contest seeking submissions from the public. I submitted: "New Brunswick, gateway to Nova Scotia!". I didn't hear back from them.  ;D

On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.

Great article. Love this picture.

I can't believe how much the Civic has grown!  It's probably bigger now than the Accord of the 70's.

My wife and I had a 73 Civic in a dark green (British racing green) with a tan vinyl interior.  It was a delight to drive.

not only that, but look at the POS they bought for their 60% wages compared to what we can get now.
