Shocking there's no cement guards...big ones...in front of the pilings as you see on other bridges with container ship traffic.

I think there are guards. I heard an interview with an engineering prof who suggested they are more to protect from a glancing blow. She said the ship looked to hit the exactly right angle (square on the bow) to take out the support and strike the deck.
Old Jag convertible...one itch I won't have to scratch again.

Apparently the local Coast Guard station had a pool running since the bridge was built as to when a ship would take it down.

Am reading this bridge had no type of bumper system for collisions?

Nothing like this, that's for sure. These can handle 89k tons at 18km/h. Huge "island" around the piling and then further protected by "dolphin" guards that rise 20 feet out of the water.

How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

This guy makes an interesting point about prop walk in reverse (that's the torque of the prop pulling the stern to one side or the other)
It will be interesting to see if they did go hard astern and that had the unintended effect of lining them up with the bridge support.  Maybe they could have coasted through the middle of the bridge still in the channel if they hadn't tried to stop.....hard to say but I'm sure the investigation will be looking at everything.   :-\

This seems highly likely.  Lots of variables at play when trying to reverse a single screw vessel even in perfect conditions.
