S.O.S. from Montreal
« on: October 20, 2023, 09:17:40 pm »
Drove the BMW to Montreal today with the family to check out McGill.
Got a CEL as I reached Montreal. Car still drives, sounds, feel normal but the light is still on even after I restarted. Oil is OK, no overheating, no fluids spills... Nothing suspicious whatsoever. CEL never came on before since I got the car....

I forgot to put my OBD in the car (I usually do when I drive longer distances).

I was wondering if anyone close by downtown Montreal (I'm staying in a hotel on Sherbrooke) who has an OBD driver can swing by sometime tomorrow to help me read whatever codes might be throwing?

I will check it out in the morning again to see if the light comes on again. One thing I didn't check is the filler cap. I topped up the gas on the way....

Autozone or part source will read codes for free. That’s an option.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

A solid check engine light isn't something to get all hot and bothered about.  Probably a bum o2 sensor or something.  It can wait until you get home.

Thanks. I didn't know that. Will check it out if it comes down to it.

True but it would be good to know what it is before driving back.

CELs don't necessarily scare me - I have a permanent CEL on the Outlander for years but I know where it's from and not a concern. I clean it from time to time but it eventually comes back.

No AutoZone in Canada, and no PartSource in Quebec. Plenty of PartSource in Eastern Ontario though, just stop into one on the way home and they'll run it for you.

Vanos solenoid, or not building up enough oil pressure, lots of options, but most likely okay.

Will buy an OBD2 dongle from CT and hopefully works with my app.
Stupid question: can I return it to a CT in ON if bought from QC?

I would doubt you could do that due to complications in different sales taxes.

CT policy doesn't mention any limits on out of province returns...

Easy fix.

Step 1. Go to Reno Depot and buy a roll of black electrical tape.
Step 2. Cut off a small little square of said tape.
Step 3. Place over the illuminated check engine light.

Done. A tried and true German car fix.

Thank you. I will take you up on the offer.

I bought a crappy dongle from CT but while it read the codes it can't clean them. I will return it before I leave Montreal tomorrow as the thing is a waste of $90.

I'm familiar with the codes thrown - P0420 and P0430 but they never thrown a CEL. Now I suspect the gas from CT. I'd really like to clear the codes, fill up with Shell as I always do and see if it comes back on my way home.

If you can PM me with a meeting point I can come anytime now.i'm at Sherbrooke and Saint-Laurent. All I need is another read and then clear the codes.

Met with Slow_lane today and got the codes cleared. CEL is gone too.

Oh, P0420 and P0430 are Cat Converter Low Efficiency for bank 1 and Bank 2. Could be a number of reasons for them from cheap to fix to  expensive. Worst is the cat converters are gone.... On the other hand, they don't affect drivability so you can leave with them forever.

I lived with the equivalent codes and CEL on the Mitsubishi for few years now with no drivability issues.
