I frequently complain about the high cost of Japanese baits. I only have ONE of these type of super premium baits!

Found this video and the amount of manual labor is pretty surprising!

They even have a testing pool.

Last year I broke the tip of my rod, so I replaced it with one from Cabela's that was on sale.

I then warrantied the broken rod (Quantum couldn't have been better to deal with) leaving me a reel short.

I've been looking around online but then saw this was on sale for $75. It seems to be a value sweet spot since a lot of features on the more expensive reels have trickled down but it's not crazy expensive.

So far so good, it spins really smooth and the 2500 size is perfect for my rod.

That's really nice...and definitely looks to punch above its price.

Nice catch!

Turns out the Japanese soaking tub is great for testing out Japanese baits!

Borderline heart broken....

Angry Bowfin did this...

Going to give it a go at fixing this.

Also, here's the fish that's responsible.

Noooooo!  That the new Shimano?

How'd it break?  Can you warranty it?

I have 2 of those Shimanos now. This is the newer 265UL+

It broke when I was landing the fish..I think. I'm guessing line wrap on the tip plus thrashing.

I have my doubts about Warranty, since Shimano North America refused to sell me the rod period...Which is why I got them direct from Japan.

I'll try and heat up the tip and see if I can epoxy it back on to the "new" tip.

Fancy!

Will it be mounted to the boat?  Or is it for walking around?

Shore fishing.

So I don't have to put my expensive rod on the ground when rigging or landing.

Re: braid.

My line is Spro Finesse Braid. 6 pound.

Though in Japan there's a different line measuring standard called "Go/Gou".

This would be # .8

I'm using 10 lb Fireline to a 10 lb fluoro leader.  Seems to work well for what I'm targeting.

I've recently started using braid after using exclusively mono line. Bear in mind I fish ultralight/finesse spinning exclusively, so my experience might not mirror others.

At this point, I personally see no benefit to using braid. And it was rather difficult to find a braid that could cast similar distance to mono throwing lightweight presentations. Most braids didn't feel "slick" and I also wonder if the micro eyes in my rods were partially to blame for disappointing distance.

I finally settled on Spro Finesse Braid. It's very "slick" and casts very well. Sadly, it's hideously expensive. And those same micro eyes proved problematic for leader knots. I settled on a tiny knot favored by carp fisherman (they use 4lb test with 8-9 foot rods with micro eyes). I figured if it was good enough for 20+ pound carp, bass should be fine. And thus far that's been proved out. That being said, I prefer no leader...until I get a long distance snag at which point I wish I had a leader!

As far as performance? I'm strictly in the "meh" camp. I'm just not seeing any benefits in my fishing. My rods are already fantastically sensitive so any benefit from the line is incremental at best. Sure, I can definitely feel less stretch than mono, but I don't think this has helped...or hurt.

So for me, I don't think braid has improved anything for me and the cost is prohibitive.

As with all things, YMMV.

I’ve used braid exclusively for pretty much my whole life. I like the feel it provides with minimal stretch and the resistance to breaks. I often fish lakes with both pike and walleye and I don’t bother with a wire leader for pike. I don’t ever recall a pike breaking off.

I should try using a fluoro lead like tortoise mentioned. Never used one, but the reduced visibility in the water supposedly helps.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

I use the Alberto knot for the leader to braid connection, it's small, strong and easy to tie.

It's been so long since I've finished with mono that I can't make an A/B comparison, but I remember that it added a lot more feel and seemed to cast a lot further.  But I'm also not running the light line like Rocket is.

Alberto is a great knot. But some knots are quite difficult to tie with tiny lines. Alberto isn't too much different from an FG knot, and that's tough one for me.

I use a "4 turn water knot". It's what the tourney carp fisherman use. And they have 4lb test with 9 foot rods with micro eyes. So if it works for 20+ pound carp, it should work for me. And so far has.

The line to line knot I prefer is SC.

My main line knot is the Fish N Fool knot..which wins the knot shootout every year. As a bonus, it's easy to tie.

Barring that, I use a Palomar or Double Palomar.

Except for dropshot. With the unique bend in the hook, a plain old Snell is perfection.

My fishing sunglasses have readers lenses in them. I'd be lost without those!!

I caught a nice, fat Pike today! It has been eating well!

On my UL, 6lb mono, no leader.

Used a Keitech Swing Impact FAT 3.8" in French Pearl paired to an Owner Flashy Swimmer willow blade in 3/16 oz.

Do you use non-barbed hooks for catch and release?
Have to use them on striped bass out east, can only keep certain sizes.
