2019/2020 Kia Sorento Diesel
« on: January 17, 2018, 09:31:08 am »
So Kia claims this is happening, possibly before the end of the year: https://blog.caranddriver.com/its-official-a-kia-sorento-diesel-is-happening-in-the-u-s/

Quote
Orth Hedrick, Kia’s vice president of product planning, confirmed at the Detroit auto show that the company is working with the EPA to get the Sorento diesel certified and ready for sale. He noted that the government agency is stricter than ever about emissions certification, which slows down the overall process, but claimed that the Sorento diesel is getting closer to U.S. sales starting by the end of 2018 at the earliest.

Kia isn’t saying at this point which diesel engine will come to America, but the obvious candidate is the turbo-diesel 2.2-liter inline-four it offers in the Sorento in Europe. That engine makes 197 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque, which would place it neatly in between the power outputs of the current Sorento’s 2.4-liter four-cylinder and 3.3-liter V-6 engine options. Hedrick mentioned impressive targets of around 30 mpg or higher for highway driving and noted that towing capacity will be an important factor for the diesel version (the current Sorento can tow up to 5000 pounds in V-6 form).

Definitely surprising!

Much like the Mazda plans to offer a diesel, I'll believe it when I see it.  For sure it'd be a big selling feature and something people will consider if they plan on towing things.

It'd be nice.  I find that these are the types of vehicles that need a diesel - not a Chevy Cruze.  I mean, it's nice - and I would have loved the Jetta TDI back in 2010 when my dad got the Corolla instead - but fuel economy wouldn't be the main driver of it.  With the Sorento, it would be - and it'd excel at it.

I hope by the time this happens they won't mess up something else, like go with a CVT or some 10spd transmission  ;)
EPA under Trump may be just waiting for the Detroit 3 to get their engines ready before they certify anyone else.
The good news about the hopefully coming 2.2D Sorento is that the diesel was used in other parts of the world so all the bugs should be sorted. The bad is 2.2D will likely be available from the SX trim level and up  ;D

Depends on your driving style. City not so much.   Highways driving hell yes, also weekend hauler.  I would definitely look into one ( if I wouldn’t be so cheap).  I would do some research on kia diesel before committing ´.

FWIW, KIA and Hyundai have been doing diesel for decades in Korea.  It's interesting, but I'm no longer in their target market.

That's the right way to advertise your product. Well done, Kia!

Did that run in a LR3 on street tires while passing through.  (Old Pirelli Ice and Snow actually lol). Lots of traction on that rock. It did well for no low range.

That must have been fun.  I'd like to give it a go before getting rid of my MDX.
