Am glad this vehicle is for the long term test drive.......I really, REALLY want to love this cuv. It has the looks (like the orange), function but that power (or lack of) and cvt.....time WILL tell.   ;)

Yup, power has been the biggest issue so far.  Great in the city actually, but lacking on the highway.

   The previous 'black one' issues that registered with me were ...noise...power (or lack of it)...slow shifting. Did I mention noise.
I like this vehicle with it's bit more ground clearance....hmm. don't know why on that one...looks more purposeful I guess. The power aspect needs to address what is actually required in a vehicle of this type in ordinary everyday usage. Enough to enter the highway traffic safely, certainly. Also to hold a highway speed limit + ticket margin without the feeling of engine strain when loaded, yeah. A quiet highway ride is important to me though.
   I look forward to reading the accounts of your experiences over the coming months about the latest generation of the offspring of the union between the Jowett Javelin and Ferguson.

Mike, not to pi$$ off your "new Subaru overlords" too much...

But as you've driven both the Impreza hatch, and now the long-term XV, can you please compare/contrast them in detail in future posts?  I just don't see the point of the XV, other than the increased ground clearance.  Less cargo space, more weight, more awkward looking (at least to these eyes), higher price.  Is there a significant reason to choose the XV over the Impreza that I'm missing?

If Subaru can hold the line on the 2014 Forester pricing (granted, that's a BIG if), I can't see much rationale for the XV in Subaru's lineup.

Driving I find the XV is easier to drive, mainly due to the higher ride height.  Handling is slightly worse, but better than you'd think.

Price wise, the XV is actually $300 chaeper than the Impreza 5-Door Sport; the model you need to trim up to get the same equipment as a base XV (the Touring.)

The differences between the two are - the Impreza gets a sunroof, the XV is rated to tow.

This Subaru XV opens new doors for the automaker here in North America - this is the direction of "normal" gas mileage, comparing with competition. Overseas Subi exist as such and the sacrifices are big - from missing AWD to diesel and CVTs. The best in the class CR-V is underpowered, the one of the most fuel efficient Rogue is with CVT, Hyundai/Kia are witht DI engines and all of them are mostly sold as FWD. Nothing wrong with this Subaru IMO, just needs to reeducate/readapt North American customers...which is a tough task ahead!

Is this a new trend here at autos.ca not to mention any fuel consumption ratings either from real world use during review or from the governmental agencies? Same deal on todays other review of the Infinity 37X coupe  ???

Price as tested: $26,290

The price you mention in the article is for XV Touring with manual transmission.
MSRP for the CVT version is $25,795 plus freight, according to the Subaru Canada web site

Last time I was at the dealer, (groping a BRZ) freight and PDI had grown to $2295.  That makes their price $26,890 with A/C tax and no sales taxes.

At $24,xxx, not bad.  At $27K, no deal.  "It's only another $2300..."  Sure.

It is just nice to see a vehicle with some colour, even if it is orange ( which I think looks OK ). I'm just so jaded with the usual silvers,gunmetals,charcoals and gray schemes.
