I'd go for the VW just because of the price and that it is from a dealer. The Crossie is approaching new $$
We test drove the VW a couple years ago and just about bought one, did buy a Crosstrek a month ago
They were both automatics, so no idea how good the manuals are, but just driving them is pretty similar IIRC
Both handle decently (the 2018 Crossie is the first year on an improved platform), are comfortable, have good old school controls, and good visibility
VW is a bit longer so more cargo room, a bit more power. Still has the good quality interior of older VW's. Styling is a bit old man
Subaru rides unusually well over potholes, is a bit taller and shorter so more manoeuvrable around town, 'younger' styling. Cargo is more similar to a regular Golf
VW had pretty high servicing costs past 60,000, but some of it was the automated manual. The full length sunroof in the higher end versions can have bad water leakage problems, but guessing yours is probably the base
