My condolences Brent.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

I can't even imagine how difficult that must be to deal with.  Very sorry to hear about your loss.  My condolences.

One of my closest friends since we met 30 years ago took his life today. We always joked that we were separated at birth. I'm gutted, absolutely gutted.

Man, I am so sorry to hear that. My best friend killed himself in 2009 and it still hits me hard every now and then.
Lighten up Francis.....

Thank you, everyone, for your kind thoughts.  It was a tough day.

Just reading this now.  Very sorry, Bubba.  I had the same experience 20 years ago, and it still hurts like hell when I think about it.  Walk slowly, my friend.

A friend of mine uprooted his family for a new job in Vancouver.  They've been there for a few months, and the executive in the company turned over, and the new CEO and COO promptly terminated all the management staff and brought in their own new people.  No severance, no notice, nada.  He came into the office this morning and was escorted out.

Are there no labor laws in BC?

In Ontario you'd get at least 2 weeks pay in lieu of notice. But lawyering up will get you more.

BC has labour laws, you bet, but that doesn't mean they aren't broken.

Ontario has the most liberal employment laws in Canada, but even still an employee needs 3 months.  I have much experience in this area.  :P

If John's pal had an employment contract then he'll get whatever the contract states.  However these are rare.  Without a contract all a lawyer will do is bleed one dry for 5 years which is the time it will finally get to court and the LOSER pays.

He's fairly senior, and has a two year contract, it was one of the reasons he was willing to move to BC and leave a pretty good job here.  They told him that the previous CEO signed the contract, so it's null and void now.  Uh, well, that's not how things work.  The contract is with the company, not the representing individual that signed it.

He's not sure about the other people they axed, but some of them had been there over 20 years.

We've lawyered up twice. Like you said, our lawyer said getting 3 months severance is "easy" and the number he uses for "starters". He said the courts here aren't terribly sympathetic to companies just cutting people loose for no reason.

After winning both times, I have no reason to dispute what he said.

Back in 1995 the AB Tories fired all the rural hospital administrators and gave no notice or severance.  My Dad was one of them.  He sued the hell out of them, and despite the fact that he'd only worked for the provincial government for seven years (he was Fed prior) he got three YEARS severance awarded by the court.  The judge was mighty pi$$ed off that the government themselves decided to ignore labour laws and hammered them hard.

I was laid off back in May of 2016 after close to 21 years of service.  I was given a 5 month"working" severance along with a miniscule payout at the end.  I told them to pound sand.  Disgusting that after two decades of dedicated service that they offer you a working severance.  @ssholes.

Well, it never rains, it pours!  Just read on FB that another friend of mine lost his job today.  I haven't read any of details, but WTF?

For working 2 months  ???  like John's friend.   ::)

Here is how it works in Ontario:   1 day less than 3 months an ex employee gets only holiday pay owning.  ZIP termination, which btw is completely different than common law severance.

To be eligible for common law severance the employer must have a minimum annual payroll of  2.5 MIL and the employee must have 5 years in.  Otherwise it's 2 weeks for every year.

After 3 months, in Ontario, if you're terminated without notice, you're entitled to 2 weeks pay in lieu of notice.
