Test Drive: 2016 Honda Civic Coupe Touring
« on: July 08, 2016, 06:31:53 am »

Honda's new Civic Sedan is much adored, but is the Coupe worthy of the same praise?

I just don't get sedan-based coupes and I guess I never will.  The whole premise of increasing "sportiness" by subtracting two doors from a sedan seems utterly contrived.

Wokeism is nothing more than the recognition and opposition of bigotry in all its forms.  Bigots are predictably triggered.

^+2.  I've almost always preferred sedan versions to the coupes.  This one looks a little better than the Accord Coupe at least, but still has that truncated look.

Sorry, but I'll keep my RSX.  Never understood why the Civic Coupe has no hatch.  RSX is not only fun to drive, but its hatch is super useful when packing gear or getting lumber etc.  Sure, it may not be as rigid as a coupe with a fixed trunk, but man can I load it up with stuff.  Pretend trunks on these newer coupes are for gym bags, and the pass throughs are low and narrow.  My RSX is much more practical as a car.

And I agree that the belt buckle chrome piece on the front is not a pretty sight.  Even my RSX has an adjustable lumbar support.  Wouldn't buy a car without one.

On our recent trip to Niagara my girlfriend got her first look at the Civic coupe and her reaction was priceless.

Her:  Ohhh....look!  A new 2 door Civic!  And its finally a hatchback!

Me:  Babe, it only LOOKS like a hatchback.

Her:  *Smile turns to puzzlement and then she turns a glare at the car*.  "Idiots."

God I love her.  :D

The whole premise of increasing "sportiness" by subtracting two doors from a sedan seems utterly contrived.

They increased the sportiness by only offering a CVT and not a 6spd manual.

Apparently a manual is forthcoming as a choice with the turbo engine.

The interior is much better. I'm not so sure about the exterior, but it is contemporary. It should be a hatch.

As far as coupe versus sedan. This is lower, shorter and lighter than the sedan, and it looks different enough to justify its existence.

Didn't they say a manual will be available with this engine at some point?

There will be a 4 door hatchback with 6spd manual coming this fall.  Not sure why the couple wasn't a hatchback.

I have a feeling that this design language will not age well.

This design language is much better executed in the coupe than in the sedan, which looks ungainly trying to look like a coupe.  Too bad it isn't a hatch though.  Must be the USA influence.

i think both the sedan and the coupe looks fantastic.  much better than pretty much any previous civics ever.

and sedan based coupes are great.

^ There are the exceptions and that is one.  The Audi A5 is another.  Mercedes coupes almost always look weird imo.  I feel a deja vu coming on... :P

^ ha! She sounds like a keeper  :)

Agree they really should've made the coupe/sedan a hatchback - or at least a liftback/kammback à la Audi A7.

Beyond that, to my eye I think the coupe looks great, certainly less of a design compromise than the comparable accord coupe/sedan.

It's true giving up the extra doors of a sedan is a compromise of practicality, but one thing that's nice about coupes - especially smaller ones, is how it keeps the B-pillar behind your head and improves your peripheral sight lines. I always appreciated that when I had a coupe.

The coupe looks very good until you get to the hideous rear end. The sedan suffers from the same problem but doesn't have the luxury of looking good, saddled as it is with a shrunken Crosstour body.

Thats my issue with it, its like they had 10 minutes to finish the rear end and they just threw something together. Just horrible, the worst part is Honda can make a great looking coupe, for example:
