Today was hill repeats day.

Some day I just know when not to chase somebody. Guy on green Felt starts up the hill just after me but I don't engage....He stands on the pedals, passes and flies up the hill like he is being pushed. Man was he fast. Very glad I didn't engage.

do roadies have a secret competition with each other out there when they run into each other?

Maybe it's the fact that I also race, but when I see someone ahead on the trail... I can't help but try to a) catch and b) pass them. Politely, of course.

My Iron Man buddy had a demo of an elliptical-geared road bikes last week, and he said he couldn't really tell the difference.  The manufacturer said the difference is greatest on hills, and decreases power required by a percentage that is felt over a long distance.  Sounds like something that won't be on the radar of recreational riders for a long time...

This. Its all about pushing yourself to become better and faster. If I just rode 'tempo' up every hill I'd never be where I'm at today. When somebody attacks and passes me I take it as a compliment.

Actually a Felt road bike and I'm pretty sure he was a roadie if I was to profile him. But lets face the facts, tri-guys can't climb.  ;D

I use other riders to gauge my ability/progress. When I do try to pass or hook up with another rider my average speed over two hours goes up 2 kph. Its a great motivator.

How often does everyone take their bike in to get it tuned up?

As a noob I have taken it in to resolve noise and gear selection issues. I am leaning more as I go and will DIY as I set up my shop in my basement.

We should have a forum bike tune-up get together. It's probably the only type of cycling-related event that will allow us mountain bikers and the roadies to participate simultaneously  ;D

Also, cars.

I'm not familiar with what's out there now, but Shimano had something like that back in the 80s. It was called Biopace, IIRC. Basically chain rings that were oval instead of round to improve pedaling efficiency or something like that. And I don't think it was on their high-end group sets: more of a mid-range thing, IIRC.

I think my brother had them on an old Kuwahara MTB. I rode it a few times, but don't remember thinking much about the Biopace one way or the other.

Chris Froome uses an oddball out-of-round chainring on his megabuck Pinarello F8 Dogma.

Going to take mine In today. Will watch them and see what they actually do. Right now I have no idea what tuneup even involves other then fixing gear noises.

Isn't there some mtn bike trails near Goodwood/Uxbridge? Maybe we could do both as I could lead a road ride in that area and you could lead the mtn bikers. Then we all meet up after for some treats.
