Looks like another Crosstrek!
« on: May 02, 2024, 05:16:46 pm »
I took my parents (83 & 87) shopping to replace their 2015 Edge that they feel is too big and a little too high for getting in/out.  I fully planned on recommending the Crosstrek and expected pushback with it being a Subaru, but coincidentally my Mother had noticed one recently and really liked it.  I was planning on also showing them the Taos, HRV, and CX30.  They fell in love though after driving the Crosstrek, and I have to admit I was super impressed as well, I can see why they’re selling so well.  I’ve always liked the looks, but didn’t expect the interior and driving feel to be as good as it is.

Of course they didn’t sign yet, my Mother would never make a decision without first keeping herself awake all night worrying about whether it was the right thing or they were making a huge mistake!  The one we drove was a red Touring with 1200km’s that they’ll sell as a demo, so I expect they’ll be buying it in the next day or two.

Uhhh how many years of driving do they have left in them? My parents in the same range and they are ahem "riding things out". Hell my father doesn't even want to invest in new tires.  ;D

Nothing wrong with that.  Likely more safety features too and will be much better for parking and getting in and out of.  If my folks ever decide to replace their Escape the Crosstrek would be a top choice.  Even nicer that they are buying a color and not just the usual boring shades.

Crosstreks, especially the previous generation pricing, were hard to beat for value.

I don't know, I went and checked out one of these things for my inlaws. I don't get the appeal at all except for the awd maybe. Otherwise, underpowered, noisy, cheaply built, I see these things everywhere and I don't get the appeal. I told them to save up their pop cans for a Rav4.
Lighten up Francis.....

Ha, I wouldn't call the Rav4 some epic step up.  Have you sat in one lately.  The best I could say about them is they are well screwed together and utilitarian, but they are epically bland.  At least the Crosstrek has some fun little quarks.

"Crosstrek has some fun little quarks."

Like what?!?!? it honestly felt like a car built for rental fleets or a punishment for exotic car drivers that got too many speeding tickets. This whole segment, Kicks, HRV, whatever that Toyota thing is are just a huge hell no. Wife had one last year when her Tacoma was in for a new set of tires, and gotta say, while I wouldn't be buying one, the Rav4 is not a bad little runaround.

I think you're just plain wrong on this one.  I've sat in and driven a few Crosstreks, and they do 'small car' better than probably any other vehicle.  They've got all the interior accoutrements one would need, they feel well put together, and they're immensely capable in any type of terrain a normal city dweller / active person would encounter.

I agree with Fob.

That being said, they get the job done.

Crosstrek makes sense at $30k and below. At $40k it's stretching. The drive experience is adequate.

But the cheapest new Crosstrek starts at $31,674 + taxes.

Or did you mean, in the $30-40K range?

I love small vehicles and I think the Crosstrek is completely mediocre.

Shame, because the previous generation could be had under $30k all in.

Most small cars, including these sub-compact crossovers, are boring and uninspiring to drive. I'd say most people shopping in this price range (new) don't care.

Congrats to your parents!  Got lots of friends that have Crosstreks now and they are a fine choice.  Glad they bought what they liked.  Father of a former coworker bought a brand new full size 4x4 pickup for his 92nd bday.  We had a good chuckle about that at the time.  ;D

All in and I was looking at a mid level. At least with the 2023s one had to move up trims to avoid the crappy halogen lights. I think the good lights are across all trims.  I wonder if Subaru is printing money with the decline of the Yen? Made in Japan Crosstrek price should be dropping.

Nope, some of my favorite vehicles are the original Mini and the original Fiat 500 Abarth....I have nothing against small vehicles when they are done right.
