I couldn't bring myself to go diving in Maui.  My last dive was in May 2016 in the Florida keys for my bachelor party. It was a shallow reef dive with random swells. One such swell pushed me and my buddy (a random) from 22ft to 3ft. Both of us popped an ear drum. I don't know about her, but it took me 6 months to get hearing back in my left ear. I was partially deaf at my own wedding.

In Maui, I figured I'd go over day, but the thought of diving with another random and spending $200 to do it...I just didn't care to.

I hope you enjoy - and I hope I get over it and get back in the water some day soon.

Just make sure you don't fly in any 737-700 with the CFM engine....

We were on a 737Max-8 YYZ-YVR and YVR-YYZ, and 737-800 from YVR-OGG and OGG-YVR (literally the exact same two aircraft).  We sat in rows 8 and 4 on the way there (respectively) and 13 and 8 on the way back (respectively).

Clearly, all you need to do is stay ahead of the engines (rows 10 and above should be sufficient), and if on a Southwest 737-700, stay on the right-hand side of the plane.

Two nearly identical failures within 20 months of eachother...

April 17, 2018:

Aug 2016:

Both times, about 12-15 mins after take-off, and around 30,000ft, left engine blows off cowl and punctures the fuselage.  Yesterday's occurrence was more unfortunate since the debris hit a window, causing the depressurization event (and the accompanying death).

The 737 is one of the most used planes and has a fairly remarkable safety record.  The only two reported such blowouts were on Southwest-operated aircraft.  Yesterday's plane was put into service in 1997 - it's 21 years old, and had only one previous safety issue (smoke in the cargo area in 2015).  This isn't a design flaw.  If that's not a maintenance issue, I cannot fathom what else would cause such a failure.

I listened to the ATC recording of the radio transmission as they landed the aircraft.  The pilot was as cool as ice as she brought the damaged plane down.  Amazing.

Plus Maui is/was having a bit of a shark issue at the moment! That would be enough to tip the scales. On that note it seems most attacks are on surfers, boogie boarders etc in murky waters (thanks rain and runoff) and not on divers.

So I just booked the final two campsites for our big Banff trip in late August.  It is now officially 100% planned out, as far as itinerary and where we sleep:

1 night in Calgary at a relative's house (as yet undetermined).
2 nights in Banff at Tunnel Mountain
2 nights in Banff at Two Jack (non-serviced site - I'll need a battery for this)
3 nights in Kootenay at Redstreak (basically in Radium Hotsprings)
2 nights in Western Saskatchewan, at Saskatchewan Landing (we got a riverside campsite)
1 night in Eastern Saskatchewan, at Crooked Lake (we got a lakeside campsite)

The idea is that we'll drive from Winnipeg to Calgary in one full day (starting at like, 4 in the morning), spending that night at a house in Calgary.  The next morning, we'll do our grocery for the next few days in Calgary and stock up on food, before driving out to Banff and setting up.  On our first full day in Banff we have a wedding at the Banff Springs hotel, which should occupy most of that day and the entirety of that evening.  The next day, we'll pack up and move down the road to Two Jack.  That day and the next will be spent exploring Banff and the surrounding area. I plan on renting a canoe in Banff, and paddling the length of both Lake Louise and Moraine Lake.  On our sixth day, after our 2nd night in Two Jack, we pack up, and will spend the day driving to Redstreak in Kootenay national park.  It's a 2 hour drive from Banff, but I suspect we'll take longer than that as we'll be stopping at every lookout and scenic vista, in order to enjoy our drive there.  Once set up in Redstreak, we have 3 nights and two full days with which to explore Radium Hotsprings and the surrounding area.

After 3 nights in Redstreak, we'll pack up and drive 8 hours to Saskatchewan Landing provincial Park, where we have a riverside campsite.  We'll spend 2 nights there, with one entire day exploring the surrounding area.  After 2 nights in Redstreak, we pack up, and drive 4 hours to Crooked Lake where we, once again, have a lakeside campsite.  Spend one night in Crooked lake, with an evening and a morning to explore, before packing up and driving the remaining 4 hours home.

This epic trip will be 12 days away from home, 11 nights on the road, 10 of those nights will be camping

This will be our final, Crooked Lake campsite.  Just gorgeous:

Maui - not so much, but the Big Island, apparently.

Either way, I'm not concerned re shark attacks.  I've gone shark diving a few times - great experience.  They seldom have any appetite for groups of hoomans with metal tanks on their backs.  It's possible, but pretty rare nonetheless.  In bullshark infested waters, I'm outtie though.

Nah, just a general fear of going deaf to keep me on the surface or within snorkel's reach.

Here is another recording with more chatter, a retired ATC friend sent it to me

Pilots train for this exact situation.  Glad to see the system works (the entire infrastructure of safety systems on a plane, as well as ATC and pilot procedures).

After a day of being under the water yesterday, today was all about relaxing.

A nice lunch at Surfer's Cafe in Oistens, with a great view of the sea.  A great Club Sandwich with a few Whiskey Sours.

Then relaxed on the beach and played catch with my little man.  Was a great day!

Gorgeous.

You know, I find it funny how the world tries to "rate" beaches as "the most beautiful", etc.  What you've pictured there is similar, if not nicer than the beaches in Maui, which were similar, if not nicer than the beaches in French Polynesia, which were similar, if not nicer than the beaches in Florida or California...etc.

We travel far and wide for the prettiest thing we can find, and yet, there it is...not so far from home.  There are subtle differences that make some more user-friendly than others (pure sand vs rocky, currents/surge, etc -- and those are all dependent on purpose since surfers prefer surge and snorkelers prefer rocky/coral-y).

Vacations are all about doing what you want to do.  I love that yours, Shane, is all about playing catch with your "little man"!  So nice to read!

So we're down in Vegas, ended up with a Mustang convertible. Getting much better mileage than No-san did in Hawaii, so far 70miles driven & averaging 25.4MPG. Here are a few pics from today & the Lambo parked at our hotel when we got back.

I'd NEVER admit to that....the implication being that No-San drove the car harder/more enthusiastically than you are!!   :stick:   ;D    :rofl2:
