2020 Subaru Forester....Mechanics didn't know
« on: July 01, 2021, 03:43:30 pm »
What to do after diagnostic.  Had to send report to Subaru Head Office Tech line. 2 days later, they confirmed what my mechanic originally said: Coolant Bypass Valve (based upon computer code)

Part is $900 !! Labour quoted at minimum 5 hours. I called Subaru Canada because even though out of warranty (+9,000 kms), seems like a serious problem. They wouldn't budge. Dealer discount part and labour 15% but still cost over $1,700.

Now only option is CAMVAP (incredibly rude and condescending woman returned call)....any other suggestions ????

Thanks,
Karen

Repair your car, and sometimes it costs a lot of money to do so.

No other advice since you are out of warranty other than maybe find a good indy that could do it for a little less.

I work at JLR, you do not want to know how much some repairs cost for some seemingly small parts. Rear coolant hoses go on your SC V8? SC off, 7+hrs labour.

If driving an Alfa does not restore vitality to your soul, then just pass the hospital and park at the morgue to save everyone time.

Now drives a Jaaaaaaag...and thus will not pay for anything during an outing...but it is OK, because....I drive a Jaaaaaag.

Nor do they have to because you are past your warranty. Also not sure why you think this is a serious problem, stuff break on cars all the time.

Also agree with others as to finding a reliable indy to do the job.

Is that like an electronic thermostat or something?

That's exactly what it is.

So basically...the thermostat failed.

Although nothing is required out of warranty, on a one year old car I’d be miffed also.

Our MDX was 6 years old when a transaxle seal started leaking. Dealer quoted me $1500 initially, dropped to $1100 after I asked for some goodwill. Acura Canada then refunded me the rest minus $300 through goodwill. I am a repeat Honda customer though.
Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction, and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.

Why? I had a part crap out (can't remember which one now) in my first year and just got it fixed at no cost to me.

TBH, I missed the 2020 part and didn't realize this was a new car but the owner did 69,000 km in one year? Should have bought something more fuel efficient.  :P

Well duh.

Let's see....."No cost to me"  vs $1700+ dollars.

I also wouldn't be pissed if a repair was free.

And WOULD be pissed if it cost me $1700.

Of course but if you plan on driving 70,000 km / year, you have to be prepared for things like this.  Plus let's not take what a one time poster (so far) says for pricing from a Subaru dealer to be the cost to fix a part.

^^Oh yea, I agree.

But it also depends on what has failed.

Do I expect a friggen thermostat to get worn out after 1 year/70k?  HELL NO.

Would I be shocked if a wheel bearing or similar moving mechanical part (possibly exacerbated by poor roads) to wear out after 70k?  Probably not.

I wouldn't expect it to fail either but :censor: happens. Maybe there should be a thread for what failed in my first year of driving my new car.

Hmmm...for me, the only thing would be the rear differential seal on my 1994 Mustang GT.  So a gasket.

So.... car is 9k kms outta warranty as a 2020? More details needed! Subaru has 3yrs, 60,000km bumper to bumper. Did Karen drive 69,000kms in 1yr during a pandemic when most people stayed home?

BS post & we'll never hear another thing.
