'72 MGB - The Official Cars of Autos.ca?
« on: April 27, 2017, 09:14:29 pm »
Well, since buying MGBs seems to be the thing to do around here recently, I figured I needed to follow suit. Ok, not really, I’ve actually been chasing this car for a few months now and finally made a deal for it.

It’s a 1972 that was imported to Toronto in 1992 from California. It’s been a local downtown Toronto car since, that’s sort of fallen on hard times recently and has been left sitting around in various shops and garages since 2013 due to the owner’s health issues. As a result the fuel has gone bad and gummed up the fuel system, so the carb isn’t currently getting fuel. Otherwise everything appears to be complete and in working order.

What sold me on this car is the body. Aside from some dust it’s damn near perfect, zero rust anywhere, perfect floors, rocker panels, sills, etc. The top is obviously shot, but that’s a fairly easy replacement. The interior is in great shape except for the steering wheel and a few cracks in the dash pad.

It’s finished in “Blaze” which is a bright orange. It is the original color, but it has received one very decent quality respray at some point in its life. Despite the dust, the paint actually looks to be in great shape, no cracks, bubbles, etc. It also has factory wire wheels, which were pretty scarce by ’72, so that makes it a bit unique.

I have zero time for this car right now though, but it was just too nice of a car at too good a price to pass up; so my plan is to get it running properly and mobile again and then store it with the others at my grandmother’s place as a project for the future. Unless someone wants it right now….I’ll take bids ;D

Only have a few shot’s I took on my phone quickly today after making the deal...Bringing it home tomorrow since it's already over stayed it's welcome at the shop it's currently bunking at....

Nice! That looks great. I'd throw a bucket water over it, add a shift knob and car it good.

Thanks, I am pleased with it for sure. One of the reasons I don't want to just blitz it now and rush it is because this car has the potential to be REALLY nice, without going overboard on the work. Some top notch detailing everywhere, a few cosmetic fixes, refinished the wheels, a new top, and it'll be a seriously nice car. Right now I am thinking a silver "MGB" stripe (thin chrome bumper style - like the one below) and a color matched factory hardtop would really finish it off nicely......All I need is time....

Stripe like this one, but silver.

Is it just me or this MGB has truck tires?  ;D That's a LOT of sidewall! Pretty nice overall, and I'm sure you got a killer deal!

I'm not crazy about the stripes myself on chrome-bumper cars. It's like updating them. On the rubber-bumpers though, the stripes give that late '70s vibe and I really like them on the later cars.

I wouldn't stripe a <69 car, but once they start getting corner markers, headrests, etc, they're already getting modernized, so I am ok with it.
And yes, the tires look tall. I didn't look at them at all yet, but I suspect they are the original size because if you look at period photos of these cars they all have really tall tires, especially on the wire wheels. Common modern sizes being different, most tires look smaller by comparison. I had a heck of a time finding the right period correct size tires for the Healey I had last year.

Temptation got me and even though I said I wasn't gunna work on this for awhile, I figured I'd at least get it running and mobile so it's easier to move around.

I knew the fuel pump was a crappy aftermarket unit that was dead. So I got a good working original SU style pump from my dad's MG parts hoard and swapped it in this morning. It's been awhile since I've done a fuel pump on a B and while not pleasant, it certainly brought back some fond memories....nothing like stale fuel running down your arms into your sleeve.

With the new pump installed one of the dry rot fuel lines up at the carb split and started leaking. I replaced that (and will do the others soon) and with about 3 cranks it was up and running, surprisingly smoothly too considering the gas in it is 4 years old. Span it around the block and I am pleased to report that it's actually very roadworthy; good brakes, clutch, etc.

Alternator light is on; could be a bad alternator, or connection, and the tach isn't working. Both of those I'll need to investigate some other time. For now, I am just happy that it's mobile.

Time to start collecting parts!

My dad and brother were here also working on an XKE project they've got going

Yeah - it's a great place to work. Only problem is that I always forget something I need at home. Today it was fuel line, luckily there was a bunch sitting around in the garage, otherwise I would've been running to CT.

Can always count on Grandma to have a spare fuel line sitting around!

I love the colour of the B btw!

LOL.

Thanks, the paint should come up really nice. I haven't even washed it yet, but it did sit out in a downpour that washed most of the dust off of it, but it still has a heavy film on it, probably from the years it spent sitting in an underground garage. A good wash and polish is in the cars future.
I want to get the wheels cleaned up, so I took the spare home with me, I'll sand it all down (dreading that - sanding wire wheels is another thing I haven't done since I was a kid)  and re-spray it. Then I'll swap it out for one of the others so one-by-one I can get them all done in my spare time. Also, I don't think anyone noticed, but the knockoffs don't match - So I dug out a few spare sets and now I can choose between the factory octagonal or the older style traditional 'eared'....I am leaning towards the eared units

Very slowly doing some little things with this car.

Last weekend I determined that the previous owner had installed a new battery in reverse polarity while attempting to get the car running. Hence the dead fuel pump, alternator and non-working Tach. Good news is that with a new battery correctly hooked up everything electrical, tach included, works fine again :) I tested the alternator though and it is fried. Spare alternator I had on the shelf is from the wrong year (of course), so a new alternator is on it's way courtesy of one of my suppliers from work.

I pulled the air cleaner assembly off when I was fixing the leaky fuel lines, so I took it home and cleaned it all up, resprayed it and put fresh clean K&N filters in....I really enjoy this type of tinkering.

I do the same.  Cigar going, tunes on, and just work at a pokey pace doing whatever...enjoying myself immensely the whole time.

Well if you guys ever run out of cars to fix for "therapy".  I would be happy to donate the Entourage to address some ongoing issues.  :-)
