Topic: What car/suv/truc should I get please?

Hi

my matrix 05 is getting old. I would very much like to buy a used vehicle to replace it.

my Criteria are:

1- has to be very fuel economical
2- has to last 10 years and more.
3- need a high ground clearance for fishing hunting trips , 8 inch or more
4- need to tow a small trailer with a ATV, or a small boat ( 1500lbs ?) 4 or 5 time a year. ( fishing hunting)
5- has to be a AWD , or 4x4. ( fishing hunting)

my priorities are: cheap on fuel and durability.

my budget is between 15,000 to 23,000 CAD

What do you think I should get?

Rav4 V6 AWD (previous generation)
Venza V6 AWD if you need it to be newer.
Both are reliable, good on gas for a great 3.5L V6.

Reliability?  Engine issues?  Seems like he's looking for a used vehicle.  A CPO RAV-4 or CRV would probably make sense...

Yes I do. my small trailer and an ATV, (or my trailer and a moose sometimes   ...) but it is automatic. do not tow with a matrix manual . my friend did and he burned the transmission twice...

Toyota Venza 8.1 inches of ground clearance, similar fuel economy.  4 cylinder only rated for 1000lbs.  Tires are bigger and more expensive on the V6, which is something to consider for light off roading.  More expensive to buy.  Reliable as well.

Since we're on the blanket statements with no justification, a friend of mine bought a 2008 Escape V6 and sold it 2 months later since it was a POS.  It had no issues when he got it, full service records, and yet it had issue after issue and drank gas like a pig.

The right answer here is a 2014+ Subaru Forester 2.5L.  8.7" ground clearance, good AWD, and very reasonably reliable.  They started at $25k new, so should easily be able to find one in his budget.  Can tow 1,500lbs, and the XT model (will hold its value better, but our 2011 is probably only worth $15,000 on the best of days at this point) can do up to 2,400lbs.  The XT drinks a lot more fuel, but the 2014+ with the CVT was far more efficient.

That's my point.  In positing my friend's Escape, I was suggesting that one-offs or even "some-offs" are irrelevant since you don't know maintenance history or when folks do band-aid fixes to hide problems until some later time.

How are any of those comparable?  I'm quoting 2014+, you're looking at 2011/2012.  The first one is an I-4 FWD...the second is a better option, but again, 3 years older.  How well do you think that 2011 V6 will hold up by 2027-2028 (10 years from now)?

Most 4-Cylinder CUV's will be able to tow 1500lbs with relative ease.

I would be looking for the newest Honda CR-V or Toyota Rav4 your budget will allow you to buy.  You'll likely find one in the 5-6 year old range.  Vehicle such as that will easily be able to last 10 years or more, as long as you keep up with regular maintenance.
