Porsche buying thread
« on: January 08, 2020, 11:06:46 am »
Seems to be quite a few members here, including me, looking / dreaming of buying a Porsche, so though we should have a dedicated thread.

Let's face it, owning a Porsche is a bucket list item for many car enthusiasts :)

New (custom order) vs. old, daily vs. weekend toy, 911, 964, 993, 996, 997.1, 997.2, 991.1, 991.2, 987, 987.2, 718, Spyder, SUV (lol just kidding)...but my head hurts.
I love it when a plan comes together.

It shouldn't have to be a bucket list item IMO. There are many reasonably priced Porsches to scratch that itch. Even for people who aren't wealthy like me. I bought both my 911 for less than $15k.

And if I had to or needed an SUV, I'd be in a Cayenne GTS. This isn't a terrible way to spend $12k IMO.

How fast is my 911?  Supras sh*t on on me all the time...in reverse..with blown turbos  :( ...

^how much are those ex 911's of yours worth now though? The 86 (can't remember the year?) is certainly worth a lot more than $15k now. As for your old 996, its probably over $15k now as well. My 951 is probably worth around $15k USD right now even.

I'm always looking at 997's, but I haven't found the right one yet, nor am I really ready to buy, looks like a new kitchen might happen first, fack me, lol!!!

Not everyone has a stomach for a super high mileage 911.

I'm not sure what they would be worth. I think his 86 had 400,000km.

The 996 was 200,000km+ no?
Any car guy who's worth his salt (all of us here) know it's condition/maintenance over mileage.

Had you not known the mileage on my 911, would you have been able to guess correctly?

TBH, I forget what my mileage was when I bought/sold my 996.

I paid $10,800 US when Canadian money was damn near par for my 86. Sold it for $30k with 400k on it.

Bought my 996 for $13k US and got over $20k for it.

Today? 86 has likely stayed the same or gone up.

996? Hmmmm....tough to say.

996 no.

The 86 was rougher.
I think you attribute some of the roughness because that era of 911 feel old. And the terrible 915 tranny.

My red interior was impeccable....and the body was in fine shape too.

But those 911 feel old car like.

(You're the only one here who drove both my 911s)

That tranny was untenable.
That was a perfect tranny too...plus I had the gated shifter and upgraded bushings and coupler. That's as good as a 915 could possibly be.

You just needed to get used to it. I recall you being rough with it for the first couple minutes....then much better (if not good) 10 minutes later. After a month you'd be a pro.

Snowy on the other hand...FFS. That tranny lost 1 pound of metal during his test drive. He just couldn't get it. LOL

But yes....a far, far cry from a "good" and modern tranny.

Other than that the car was beautiful. Would love something like that.
There's a 70 911T forward dated to a mid 80 911. $27k.

Restored and matching numbers, these are nearly $100k cars. And if that decklid is an OEM part, that's worth $5k at least. I'm tempted...I've chatted with him. Car used to be yellow. I'd put it back to long hood and just drive it....and restore as I go. This car has potential. You won't get a long hood cheaper than this.....

Pictures below of what it could look like

That 915 was replaced by a "normal" G50 in 1987.   Get one made after that.

You do get used to the 915, at least the throws are so huge you don't get the wrong gear too often.

Hard to say if that's a T, E, or even an S.   If it does indeed have carbs, it's a T, which has the least power, but is arguably easier to live with than the injected ones (I can't remember if all the Targa tops were also T cars).   But if you're not familiar with what those injections systems look like, you might think it's carbs as they have individual throttle bodies, the owner doesn't seem to know what engine is in it.

Reasonably easy to work on and parts are pretty easy to track down. Buddy is currently restoring one.See thread here:  https://www.autos.ca/forum/index.php?topic=99087.msg1288623#msg1288623

The biggest thing is matching numbers. If matching, value near $100k.

If not...20-30 percent less.

If anything, I would take this particular example down an outlaw path...

Plus the 911 does a great job as a GT car...is still fun despite auto IMO
