How much work/money would be needed for this paint job?
« on: July 19, 2017, 02:48:18 pm »
Hello,

Looking into purchasing a car but the paint on it is pretty bad. It looked like house paint almost but when I asked the guy he said the previous owner spray painted it. How much would this cost to get done at a shop, and could I fix this on my own? Thank you very much!

The pictures don't really do its full justice but they show a bit.

A proper, read: NOT MAACO, job is very expensive and very few places can actually paint a car right.
Lighten up Francis.....

Lots of places CAN, but people usually balk at the price.

Seen a lot of body shops work that wouldn't be acceptable on an $800 Ford Tempo.....

But was that incompetence or people saying "do it for as cheap as you can"?

Most were insurance jobs, but a guy I know tried to have a project car done at a body shop, didn't haggle on the price and it took them 3 tries to get it to an acceptable point.

Wasn't thinking on spending that much, but I knew it wasn't a cheap job. I wouldn't need amazing quality, just a passable look. If I used primed paint myself would it look a lot better or will it still look similar?

The only passable home paint job I have ever seen is a guy that bed linered his entire Jeep.....otherwise, you can tell you did it at home with rattle cans.

if you know what you're doing, you can save some money by doing a lot of the prep yourself, but know that quite a few people that do that save nothing thanks to actually making more work for the body shop.

I can't see the pic so I don't know the paint job or the car, but realistically, no one paints cars anymore unless they're looking to preserve something special.  Typically today, any decent paint job is worth either more than the car or such a significant percentage of the value, it makes no sense.  Have a sweet 1974 2.7L 911?  THAT is worth putting money into the body.  An E30 BMW M3?  Sure.  Most "regular" cars?  No.

I saw the pics of the civic and would walk away from a car that wasn't cared for by previous owner(s).
