I think they have resolved the website issue by showing hockey games on national tv to divert owner's attention. Since I'd rather watch drying paint than hockey, I just sailed right through the claim process  ;D

For those about to place a TDI claim, get ready to scan a piece of gvt ID, the front and back of your registration and your original sales contract, all in separate files

Fair point about waiting on a new car and wanting to keep the mileage down.  Just seems like waiting a day or two for demand to die down isn't a big deal.

Did you consider keeping your 2015?  Was the buy back high enough that it wasn't worth it?

I need the new car ASAP for my most excellent sideline  ;)

No, worried about what the fix will do. If the design team went with the software, there must be a reason.

My Golf cost me $110 for two years and 20,705km. Yup, worth it  :)

Not sure what you mean by "If the design team went with the software, there must be a reason." (Not doubting, just curious)

From what I've read the software changes put more stress on the emissions components so they're redesigned to be more robust.

There isn't supposed to be an impact on performance and economy with the phase 2 fix and by all accounts the DSG cars have been improved by the phase 1 fix.

Though, after the 265,000km warranty runs out these things might be time bombs.

Blueprint, I'm curious as to why you (and others) are so eager to get out of your TDI. At least from a mathematical standpoint it doesn't make sense unless you're racking up a ton of KMs.

My dad showed me the math he did for his '14 wagon. The difference between selling it back today and selling it back closer to the deadline is a mere $800. So he's basically paying ~$50 a month to continue driving his car rather than buying a new one now. Granted, he doesn't drive a ton, but even if you put a moderate amount of KMs on it the value was not affected greatly.

I'm using it as an opportunity to try something new. It's not a rational decision. Financially, it would make sense to keep the TDI, especially considering the extended warranty coverage. It is a great car subjectively as well. At least I know our 2015 will not be scrapped so don't have to feel guilty for turning it in.

People are worried that they will have an accident that will force them into writing off the car.  This means insurance will settle the claim and they will be out the buyback and  trade money.

That's totally fair.

Right now I'm leaning towards doing the buy back closer to the September 2018 date or Buy-Back trade in next summer once I get to see VW's 2018 products. Since we're over the 65,000 thresh-hold it doesn't make any sense to turn it in right away. Original plan was to keep the current long-term but the buyback has just too good to pass up.

As the others said. The car was basically free in my case, so the deal makes sense right now - you can't beat zero depreciation! Plus, being an engineer, I find that the plug-ins are fascinating in daily use, and the timing is right for that while the gvt money is still on the table.

Sounds like the same fix that has been applied in Europe and is becoming a headache with many reports of breakdowns and major fuel decrease!

Right. Different update than NA. At least that's what I've read.  Either way, my car is definitely driveable.

Read about the issues in Europe, but not sure the Euro cars have the urea injection system the US Passat has. I was read to bet that a solution would be found for the Gen2 cars because of the already-installed DEF tanks.

A solution has been announced for the 12-14 Automatic Passat.

From what I've read, the EPA had to review and approve the fix for the cars and part of that approval meant the cars performance and economy  couldn't be impacted.

Good read!

The whole process sounds frustrating. I'm not at all surprised that the portal is so glitchy though. That's a fairly complex application that likely had to be built pretty much from scratch, and take all sorts of parameters into consideration. Not the type of thing that you want to rush but obviously they had no choice.
