What "build and price" sites have you been on lately
« on: January 10, 2014, 09:02:55 am »
Not that I need a new car but lets face it, we are car people and would probably have a new car every year if we could.

This morning I was building a Lexus CT200.
Yesterday was on VW checking out the Golf but lost interest and will wait to see the MKVII version.

M-B   checking out the options on the GLK250
VW        "                                         Tiguan
BMW      "                                         X1 and X3

BMW site insists on having the 'right' Java.   Firefox whines and complains about any Java nowadays.  I use Chrome for BMW.  As Sailor says, M-B not much better than BMW.
I haven't looked at the Audi site lately ( would be for the Q5) but IIRC it worked fine.

I've been on pretty much all the build and price sites ;)...though not so much lately

As to the comments about the crappy BMW/MB build sites (I agree, BTW) - which do forum members like using the most?  I generally find the Japanese and Korean car sites to be the easiest (especially Mazda, Subaru, Hyundai).  But that might simply be because they give you less customization of the vehicles - less options means a much cleaner "build and price" site.

Building up a D3 truck can get overwhelming with various combos and permutations of wheelbase, 2 or 4WD, engine choice, axle ratio, and of course a myriad of options.  But it's great that truck buyers have so much flexibility - at least if ordering from the factory. Almost as much choice as on the Porsche configurator!  ;D

I do this all the time, it's a bad habit!  Before I know it, I've wasted  an hour or two...  I need a child lock placed on these websites :rofl2:

As I've just ended my hunt for a car, I've recently been on pretty much all the Build and Price websites.  The sites that stand out in my opinion are Ford (in a good way) and BMW (in a bad way).  Mazda, Subaru and Lexus are pretty good amongst the Japanese makes.  Of the Germans, I think Audi has the best site.

I find it hard to find the freight/pdi cost on some of these German auto sites.
I think some of them are as much as $3k.

Your build and price balloons to $5k+ after you click the include freight/pdi/taxes checkbox.

  Come on now Fob, that's pretty much all of us on this forum...we've each wasted a chunk of our lives building web cars we'll never buy!  And not just high-priced exotics - I'll admit to building some sh!tboxes too, just to see what's out there...

I find the domestic sites (GM, Ford etc) almost impossible to use their 'build and price' calculator, and they've swamped everything with cryptic options.

Audi and Infiniti do not have a build calculator - not sure why they are hiding.

Volvo does not display taxes on the lease calculator - very sneaky. Ditto M-B.

Most helpful sites are Toyota, Subaru and VW for build and price estimates.

Subaru, Honda, BMW (it never works properly... ::) ::) ).

Have any of you tried Ferrari's? I could spend HOURS just customizing my dream 458.

As above...it's a compulsion every time I have the slightest interest in a particular car.  It's not just cars either...audio stuff, shop tools, watches, music...ad-infinitum... :-\
