What cars do you realistically plan to own?
« on: February 25, 2013, 10:12:32 pm »
OK, so no lottery win questions etc.  On your current and realistic future budget, what car purchases are on your wish list?

Me:

  • Motorbike x 2 - One for me, one for the wife.  Both getting our licences this Summer, will get one bike this year and another next year.
  • Jaguar - Either an XJR, XKR, or XJR, possibly a replacement for the 5 series when I decided to move on.  I just can't get enough of that engine.  I would have put C63 on the list but the Jag just tops it for me.
  • Ford F150 - At some point in my life I have to own a truck, the F150 is my favourite.
  • Ford Mustang / Chevy Camaro - Again, I have to do the redneck muscle car thing at some point.  This will replace the wife's car, she prefers the Camaro.  I'm intrigued to see what the 2014 models end up like.  Will likely buy one used if they are good.
  • Jeep - Even if I only own this for a year, gotta do it once.
  • Daytona Cobra (Factory Five) - Can't wait to build this, it will be a project for me in a few years time when the kids are a bit older.  Was planning on doing it next year but I have very little spare time at the moment.  Always wanted one of these, one of my favourite cars of all time.
  • Ferrari 348/355 - After selling the Cobra.  Obviously can't own everything at once, LOL!
  • Morgan 3-Wheeler - Again, another fun car, will have to see if they even come to Canada or I if can get one in.  A ridiculously fun car, and one you can drive at the limit without getting into too much trouble.  If not one of these then a Caterham 7.

The only thing in here to really stretch the budget will be the Daytona, with which I can spread out the cost as I build it, so 2-3 years.  Hopefully after keeping it for a few more years I can then save up a bit more, sell it, and move on to a Ferrari.  So it sounds expensive but I believe it's realistic if I work hard enough.  I love cars so am willing to sacrifice other things.

 :)

Yours?

Good call.

I will always have something put aside for repairs etc.  as per our last Porsche discussion.  I would much rather own many cars of character than drive around in reliable econoboxes my whole life.  Life is just too short.

I dream about this car, should have never sat in one  :P We are talking 3-4 years from now when the purchase price will be.....well....reasonable.

Someday in the hopefully not-too-distant future I see adding an LS3 Miata to my stable.  I love the look and spartan engineering of the NA Miata, and one with 540 RWHP would be amazing, especially considering the minimal weight increase and retained chassis balance.

A complete turn-key car is $35K, which to me seems like a LOT of performance for the dough.  (4lbs/hp!!!)

At this point in life...a realistic dream car would be a E90/E92 335i, WRX, GTI or a BRZ/FR-S. I have had a huge crush on the GTI for a while now.

As evident from another thread, I won't say no to a previous gen LS460 at some point. Looking at 2010. For the Canadian model that's the MY Lexus added Mark Levinson stereo as standard equipment  8)

Most of the ones we've looked at (pre-2010) have it.  I don't recall looking at one yet without it.

Have seen a few LS430s without it though....Isn't an L600h more your cup of tea?

Within 6 months a replacement for my aging Maxima for sure. It's up in the air exactly what will be replacing it.

Other than that, as follows....

- A ZR1- had a ride a few years back and still dream about that car
- Audi URS4
- Duramax powered Suburban/Yukon
- A nice luxoboat, maybe a 10 yr old S class, 7 series, or newer DTS, Town Car, Ls 460...

On my list of cars to own is an Mazda6 diesel manual, MX-5, BRZ, BMW 328 xdrive touring, and if I had to tow (never a truck), a VW Touareg TDI (over 400lbs of torque!)

I got that impression while looking at US ebay listings. Maybe most Canadian models came with M.L. I don't know..
What mine will have to have is cooled seats (I suppose front seats are cooled in any LS460) and also adaptive cruise (tech package).
The AWD and L also come standard with air suspension IIRC.

Ariel Atom to sharpen my reflex-my boss's been complaining about my reflex for 2 years now! As for a daily driver the MB-B seems like a good bargain, easy to get her nod. And finally a F150 to handle the Atom!

I want to say a 911 S4 but honestly probably another sedan…maybe a Mercedes AMG E63 or CLS63. Would sniff BMW and Audi offerings before deciding. The Lexus LS 460 F-Sport is a wild card. I think luxury would get the lion's share of my budget over performance...maybe squeeze out a Mustang GT convertible for weekends after the kids are through school. And more GMC pickups.

The Berlin taxi will keep me smiling for a couple more years...have to deal with my wife's ride next.

I have to sell the Aerio before going to Russia this August.  I won't buy a car in Moscow - too crazy - so I have been thinking of what I might buy when I return in 2016 or 2017...

So far I have been thinking of either Mini Cooper or Abarth 500 - something small and fun for the city, but it all depends on what they do to these models over the coming years.  A Jeep Wrangler is also on the list...

I'd love to get a Mercedes W123 turbo diesel wagon...

Honestly, I really don't like most modern cars, and with the death of the C30, there isn't a Volvo I would buy.  I really don't like the looks of any cars currently sold in Canada (within my price-range), with the exception of the models listed above...
I'd rather be car-poor than house-poor...

If you don't like the looks of most modern cars, how did you end up in an Aerio?  Not exactly a looker if you know what I mean.   Unique and functuional yes...but not much on looks.

from my younger days i am so obsessed with this model.  :popo: One day i will be sole owner of one or many of these kind.

My matrix is 11 yr old and has 220 kms on it, but it's still running strong and I intend to drive it until I finish paying back my student loans.

Then a current gen highlander, or an outback. 6cyl only, and loaded please.

I've been thinking about this quite a bit lately myself.  I'm in the somewhat unusual situation where my wife & I work in the same place, so it's rare that we need two cars - this presents a challenge and an opportunity:

Challenge:  Find a daily driver that we could both live with.  We have tried this before - she wants nothing more than a simple a-b appliance... in other words, she'd be happy-happy in a Corolla, where i'd rather hang myself, so up 'til now we have both bought and paid for our own cars.   But.. we recently test drove an XV Crosstrek that she really liked and I liked enough I could live with it... so, this could open up the...

Opportunity:  A toy for me.  This could be anything from an MX5, S2000, Mustang Convertible, or CPO IS-F  (note no FGC's... :) ).  Ideally, would want something that could be in a pinch driven in winter...

Having said all that... don't want to tie up a bunch of $$ in car(s) for the next while - - we both want to travel extensively in the next ~5 years, so will be directing more disposable cash this way...
