Generally, the actual certificate is charged out @ $50. and then there is the actual inspection which is now more comprehensive so everyone upped the rate.  For example, Toyota Dealer in Ottawa say $100 per hour will probably charge $150 plus tax plus any BS they find.

Check all lights yourself including both rear license plate bulbs.  That's a common thing and save you $50 right there.

It's only required if you sell a car privately.  I keeps the real beaters off the road.  The annual thing would never fly here.

But yet people put up with annual Emissions tests?

So you're saying I can go into a Toyota dealership and ask for a safety certificate, but then I'll say "don't bother checking x, y, and z - I can do that myself", but somehow it'll get into the certificate?

Something smells not right about that.  I doubt I can do anything to "save" other than taking it to a mechanic who is not at a dealership.  My thought is that CT would be reasonable, but an Economy Lube type place would be the cheapest if they'll do it.

Apparently "Gary's" will do it for $99 +HST:
http://garysautomotive.com/services/safety-check-ottawa/

This place says $69.99 + $10 for the certificate ::)

Oooh, this place is a steal at $65 + $10!

You do the light inspection BEFORE you take it in and replace BEFORE if necessary.   :rofl2:

"Toyota" was an EXAMPLE for pricing purposes.

The emissions tests are always biennial. (Bi-annual is twice per year).

And as of April 1st they are now free.

It's not province wide thank god and I believe the first 6 years of a light vehicles life is left unmolested.  However, any resell requires a test even on a 2 month old vehicle which I believe is also getting changed.

Like Tort say as of tomorrow it's no charge.  ::)

On one hand it costs Dealers to resell used cars, but on the other hand it drives many to buy new.  Overall it's just more DUMB government policy.

No need for an emissions test at all.

The province has also cut the requirement for an emissions test any time a car is re-sold or transferred to a new owner. Instead, the buyer will simply have the car tested at its next scheduled bi-annual check.

Tentatively sold.  Supposed to deliver next weekend in the GTA.  Meeting at a CT where the car will get a safety certificate - if it passes, the sale's good and we'll drive to Service Ontario from there.

Easiest car in the world to sell.  My neighbours sold their daughter's older Corolla in less than 3 hours and newer ones sell in days.  I have no idea of why a Corolla owner would trade one in and take $3-5K less for it.

Just be careful at CT.

I once did a safety there.  Guy came out and said, Sir, I have some bad news.  Your vehicle needs 1500 in repairs.

He went over the list.  I said, listen, 90% of that stuff isn't REQUIRED for safety.  He finally admits it and says, yeah it needs a tie rod to pass.  K do that.  Thanks.

"Recommended" is not required.

They had things on there, like dirty battery terminals $100 to clean.

I do know safety rules in Ontario have changed for 2017.

Any leaks are automatic fail now among other things.

So I suppose there is no market for Italian cars, older BMWs or any EJ25 equipped Subarus.  Wow.
