I presume all this talk of swearing is ok because it's in a VW thread and that's what owners will be doing when the CEL comes on.

Never saw a CEL in my VW!

The Alltrack vs. [new] Allroad comparison is an interesting one. I do wonder how much better the Allroad's FWD-based "quattro ultra” is than the Alltrack’s 4motion in the real world.

For taller folks, and having sat in both cars, I do think there’s appreciable value in the Allroad’s longer wheelbase  and airier-feeling – if only slightly – cabin. And then there's the noticeable power difference - that's worth a good chunk as well.

I think the sweet spot might very well be a used B8.5 Allroad, with its tried-and true ZF 8-speed, “real” torsen quattro, all on a platform that has, if owner reviews are to be believed, had most of its kinks ironed out.

a $795 Light package that adds dynamic cornering lights, LED headlamps, and headlight range adjustment.
Such a reasonable cost IMO, and I couldn't imagine ordering one without it.

think carefully about whether all-wheel drive is important to you. If not, maybe the Golf Sportwagen is a better option.
As pi will tell us, you can get a Sportwagen with AWD, too...In fact, I'd love a three-way comparo between the Golf, Golf Sportwagen, and Golf Sport Alltrack (sort of like how the Kia hybrid triplets were tested).  Heck, if you could find an e-Golf, then a foursome!  No Tiguans invited - who invited the fat cousin?!  NOBODY INVITE THE FAT COUSIN!

As a final thought, Jacob, if Maddie wants to listen to Tay-Tay, who are you to be a nay-Tay-sayer?

pi will indeed tell you. For the uninitiated : https://www.autos.ca/forum/index.php?topic=100536.msg1342442#msg1342442

Light package is not available on the pauper trendline model.

Review covered most things I'd say about the car. I struggle to see the value equation in the Alltrack but I'm cheap. I prefer the look of the wagon too, though the drive modes would be cool.

So far I've loved the Golf Wagon - however I haven't put the 4motion to its paces really. There aren't many competitors - I guess the outback/crosstrek if you want manual, and Allroad if you've got money and don't care about the third pedal.

Tortoise and I will do TDI DSG vs TSI 4MOTION MT comparison, at least.

Nice review.........an AWD manual transmission wagon. Can't really ask for more. A nice choice as a family car.

Too bad about the steering wheel heating, seems like an odd omission, given it is available in Europe.

One of the missing option buttons on the left side of the shifter is for disabling the auto start-stop.

Strangely, I was under the impression that the MY2018 Golf would get the virtual cockpit across the board... I don't see it there. Is it an option ?

In Canada only the e-Golf and R get virtual cockpit.

Both of which are made in Germany, coincidence?  You can get it in some of their SUV's thought right, like the Tiguan and Atlas.

Yup, Atlas, Tiguan both get it.  New Jetta is getting it as well in the top trim.  My guess is Model Year 2019 will be when Golf line gets it as well?

I wouldn't hold my breath. I'd bet we won't see it in other Golfs until the MkVIII.
