Some very moving music, here!

NoTo, agree that it makes some people uncomfortable to plan for their own passing - superstition, maybe.

Tortoise, how big is your church?  That first song goes for 10 minutes!   :rofl2:  Thanks for introducing me to Iron and Wine - very cool.

That Iron and Wine song has been my alarm clock tone every morning for the past 1.5 years.

It is now changed to the Jurrasic Park theme song, with thanks from this thread :P

No, I was being serious.  And Weels sorta makes my point.  While his song is lighthearted and would certainly change the mood, there may be nobody else in the room who might "get" the song as it pertains to him and his life.

In my circle of friends, death is a regular occurrence but not well planned for.  We all feel that we'll be the one that lives to be a hundred. Otherwise no one would get married, have kids, etc, etc.

I've been thinking this over for a couple days and can't settle on the final two.  I'm leaning to "Share The Land" by The Guess Who and "Try Not To Breathe" by R.E.M.  The Guess Who have been my favourite band since 1969 so they have been the "soundtrack to my life" as Burton Cummings says.

Here's Share The Land from the band's 1970 appearance on the Johnny Cash Show.  They played live, no lip-synching on that show.

I just assume that people will be devastated and need that much time.  Though, that might only be my perception of things.

what i found kind of interesting is that my first thought was automatic... and it was two songs by the same band.... growing up, i loved unwritten law... and i played acoustic guitar and sang...

so this first one is a fitting tune and they did an acoustic version... about death (video includes lyrics)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UN4F8A1kxkg&list=PLQi5BcgTgS3Mohz-zebTrecAOsB17tdKw

then this one which i always said i would have played at my wake/funeral (when young i assumed i'd die at a young age)... after all.. life is a holiday.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UN4F8A1kxkg&list=PLQi5BcgTgS3Mohz-zebTrecAOsB17tdKw

and one to be played at the pub after the funeral.. i expect every person in there to be singing along and getting rowdy...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWrGHsMtlKo

i'm sure as i age, i'll change.. but i was amazed that the first two popped into my head so quickly... i haven't listened to that band in years.
i used to be addicted to soap, but i'm clean now

fantastic cover!  (Original is by the Flaming Lips - for those that didn't know)

I LOVE Iron & Wine and if you have a chance to see them live - DO IT!!!

Now for the topic at hand...

my dad once said he wants me to play:
Elton John's Funeral for a friend and Pink Floyd's Wish you were here

Music and it's context is so huge for me.  I get all nerdy about it.
So off the bat I have no idea what I'd want someone to play.

this would be one of the songs (i think)
Sigur Ros - Olsen Olsen

For me:

All Night Loud by The Cat Empire, from Steal the Light;

Not sure about a second one, so many good songs, but probably something a little upbeat.

I wish we had played Mark Knopfler's Piper to the End from his Get Lucky album for my dad at his funeral, it would have been appropriate for a WWII vet.

The Cure: Plainsong

"Plainsong" is a definite yes - for the second song it is a toss up between Sarah McLachlan and Moby and Daughter...

I'm changing my first choice.

This song has haunted me for so many years, and only the Juno version does it for me.  Miss kd lang, doing Cohen's "Hallelujah" at the Junos in Winnipeg in 2005.  I have yet to find another cover that's better than this one.  I love kd for many reasons, but what helps is that she sings in my key (I'm a baritone as well).

For me? I'd rather my wife just cremate me as quickly and simple as possible without a proper funeral. I've no idea what songs I'd pick though; there are too many to pick from.

Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash.
