Yeah, definitely less helicopters than planes out there (less heli pilots, too) but it doesn’t seem that unusual to me. Might be a western thing: there are lots more helicopters working out here than back east.
Not many ex-military pilots in Canada. I’d say 98% are civilian and went to a commercial school for the license. That’s how I did it. Sounds like there are more ex-military guys flying in the States, but it’s pretty rare up here.
Commercial heli license is only 100 hours in Canada, but there aren’t too many jobs available for guys right out of school. Sightseeing tours is one way to start (how I did it at 100 hours), and also those city news helicopters are often flown by low-time guys.
Some guys get lucky and start out flying in the bush right away, but it’s tough because lots of customers have minimum requirements of 500 hours. And lots more companies (especially in the oil patch) require 1,500 hours minimum, so it can be a tough slog to get going.
