Well, I am amazed at the hate mail and general ignorance of some of these posts. I am one of these "idiots" who dropped a pile of my hard earned cash on an '11 Outlander XLS. So, here goes:

- this car is no more or no less expensive to maintain than any other car I have owned (Altima, Sonata, Elantra, Mazda5)
- the warranty if fully transferable - warranties are attached to the cars and not the owners
- but I haven't had to use the warranty - this is easily the most reliable car I have owned. 85k and no issues at all - even original brakes!

Why is there so much hate for Mitsubishi on these types of forums? Does the world really need another Rav-4/CR-V/Rogue clone? Isn't a little difference a nice change of pace?

nope...the 10 year powertrain warranty (referred to as the 10-5-5 warranty), is only available to new owners of new cars.

http://www.mitsubishi-motors.ca/en/warranty/10-5-5/

Eligible Vehicles

Warranty coverage applies to new owners of new vehicles from late Model Year 2004 and later.

From Mitsubishi.ca's website:

At Mitsubishi, we’re so confident in the quality, reliability and durability of the cars we build that we back our passenger cars and sport utility vehicles with some of the most comprehensive warranties available. This list is headed by a 10-year/160,000 km Powertrain Limited Warranty*, a
5-year/100,000 km fully transferable bumper-to-bumper New Vehicle Limited Warranty
, The only vehicle manufacturer that offers up to
5 year/100,000 km accessory warranty and 5-years/Unlimited kms Roadside Assistance. So now, when you drive off in your new Mitsubishi, you'll leave with even more peace of mind, knowing you can enjoy it to the fullest for many years to come. (Excludes Lancer Ralliart, Lancer Evolution, See details below.)

Since the bumper-to-bumper warranty coverage lasts for 5yrs/100,000km and is transferable, that is equal powertrain coverage to most other auto brands in Canada. This makes sense to me. Why would Mitsubishi offer 50% more coverage than any other manufacturer to a second owner?

the 5-5-5 warranty is transferable , yes...as i mentioned, the 10-5-5 is only available to the original owner (therefore, likely more about marketing than a true benefit)...the 5-5-5 warranty is also essentially the same as Kia/Hyundai...it is also marginally better than VW's 4 yr/80k, but certainly an improvement over the most common 3 yr/60k warranty that many brands offer...if it makes you feel any better, Hyundai's "10 year powertrain warranty" offered in the USA is only for the original owner, so Mits isn't the only one doing it (although, they are the only one in Canada doing it).

my concern is more about support and the brand still being around...i realize there are laws to protect you in terms of warranty, but i can't see Mitsubishi lasting much longer...they only sold 30,000 vehicles last year in Canada/USA...Suzuki did the same or better and closed shop, Mits can't possibly be far behind...i was surprised Mits didn't pull out 5 years ago...i honestly don't know how they can afford to still keep the lights on.

Hello there,

Actually, Mitsubishi sold over 62 000 cars in the USA for calendar year 2013 and is tracking 29% higher in 2014. A realistic projection may then be 70-80 thousand cars in the U.S for 2014. Canadian sales will likely contribute an extra 22-27K  units to the total

It would be unusual to pull out of a market that you are growing in (albeit slowly). Especially considering the Outlander PHEV arrives next year, along with a refreshed RVR and (hopefully) Lancer.

but if you look on that same list they were selling over 345,000 in 2002 and almost dropping every year since - that is a massive drop.

2007 - 128,993
2008 - 97,257
2009 - 53,986
2010 - 55,683
2011 - 79,020
2012 - 57,790
2013 - 62,227

Suzuki in the same period:
2007 - 101,884
2008 - 84,862
2009 - 38,695
2010 - 23,994
2011 - 26,618
2012 - 25,357
2013 - 5,946

almost seems like Mitsubishi is heading in the same direction unless they do a massive turn-around.

They don't sell a lot of cars in North America ( at least in comparison ) but they all don't have a lot of overhead here.  They don't need to sell as many cars to make money.  They also have an established world market so they are not dependant on NA sales.  I don't think they are in trouble.

We can be agreed that they need to sell more cars. Which means they need more product and timely refreshing of what they already have in the market.
