Toyota Corolla vs. Matrix vs. Camry vs. Yaris
« on: June 16, 2008, 08:53:58 pm »
I am in looking for a new Toyota car to replace my old one.

I have looked at the Yaris, Corolla, Matrix and Camry and the pricing is similar.

Are there any recommendations for me?

Let me add more details:

There are any known reported issues for the cars?

Which one is the most safest car?

Which one is the most fuel effective?

Which one has the best features for the money?

Probably Corolla

Which one is the most safest car?

All else equal, size does matter. Camry. On the other hand the Corolla/Matrix are a newer design so its likely a wash but check www.iihs.org and nhtsa.dot.gov.

V6 Camrys had some issues IIRC, but the I4 should be ok.

Does that apply to the 2009 Camrys?

If you're looking for fuel economy, the 1.8L Corolla is the best choice.  As for pricing, you can get a well equipped Corolla for MUCH less than any Camry.  Our CE-C Package 09 was $20K including GST, etc. and has AC/AT/cruise/PW/Keyless and more.  The 09 Corolla FINALLY comes standard with ABS, side and curtain airbags.

As for fuel economy, we've been averaging 7.5L/100km in congested city driving, and on the two highway trips, we've done 5.4L/100km on one and 5.1L/100km on the other.

Why only Toyotas?

Methinks you are buying the brand and not the car.

I think you missed the Avalon also ;)

Maybe you should write down what you really want out of a car as you are all over the map right now.

The past 2 American cars (Ford and Chrysler) that I had, didn't last long.  There always seem to be some sort of mechanical issues.

The current Toyota car lasted over 11 years.

No, only affected early 2007s.

Right, well you could open yourself up to a whole slew of statistically highly reliable vehicles. One sample is not a trend.

The 1.8 L Corolla and the 2.4 L Camry are about as bullet proof as they get.  Same with the Yaris. All their respective automatic trannies as well and very easy and inexpensive to service.

Which one is the most safest car?  Camry, followed closely by the new Corolla

Which one is the most fuel effective?  Yaris, manual.

Which one has the best features for the money?  Corolla, hands-down.

Good luck!

Quite the mix of vehicles...most people shop type of vehicle (midsize sedan, SUV, minivan, small car, etc.).

The Camry that had problems was the V6 version.  The I4 seems to fine from what I was reading.

As for best bang for your buck...probably the new Corolla.  The 2009s have all of the safety features and are basically just as good as the Camry for safety (very very close now), have some of the nice amenities, and are good on gas.  My 09 Corolla XRS has quit a bit of pep too as it has the Camry's 2.4L engine in the smaller and lighter Corolla body...I have a few complaints about the vehicle but they are non-mechanical.

Depends what you want...larger midsize, midrange compact, or a sub compact like the Yaris.  Honestly I would cross shop at least the Honda's which generally have a very similar reliability record.  Fit versus Yaris, Civic versus Corolla, and Accord versus Camry.  Do it at least so that you know the differences...even if you prefer the Toyota's you'll at least know why on the terms that you feel are important.

When in doubt, picked a loaded Corolla in the best color of choice.
