Political & Religious Discussion subforum
« on: January 15, 2019, 02:11:36 pm »
I noticed the politcal correctness thread is locked and I wonder why? Sure it's getting a little heated in there and I am keeping my mouth shut in that conversation but it's in a subforum with a title pretty much implying that things can get feisty for a reason.

Yes  but that discussion had just gone off into name calling after  Ms B had asked politely for them to give up.

True. Contentious or not, there's no need for personal attacks.

It had turned into namecalling long before that.

It was starting to get a little ridiculous... I was wondering when it would get locked  :rofl2:

Question though, who locks it? Was it Brig? Someone at Trader? Just curious.

My guess it was most likely [CENSORED]'s mom because dinner was ready...

No, wasn't me.  I don't have moderation permissions in that section.  Jacob used to, and maybe he still does.

It went on as long as it did because I rarely go in there.  Someone did call my attention to it yesterday, though, which is why I spoke up.

+1. I have not gone into that thread and I won't.

There's a couple topics that I don't generally like to discuss, politics, religion, and money. It's often tempting for me to chime in, rebut an argument etc... when someone posts publicly but unless it's a close friend and we're chilling in person, I refrain.

That said, I also strongly believe in the freedom of thought and expression, as long as there is no personal attack. That's the red line.

It was indeed way beyond the popcorn stage, so it’s good that it was locked.

Why have a political subforum if it gets locked when things get too...political?

The better decision might be for the forum to not host political discussions, given that it is off-topic for an autos forum.  That's not restricting speech so much as hosting on-point discussion.

Based on experience to date, removing the political subforum would probably be a net improvement to autos.ca.  The discussions are never fruitful because the primary contributors tend to have no demonstrated interest in "discussion" properly so-called.

I think for the most part, threads in that section of the forum remain civilized, and fruitful discussion ensues.

The particular thread that was locked, however, had degenerated far past anything I have ever seen on a forum before.

This, a computer forum, and a camping trailer forum.  That's about it.  All are pretty civilized.

Digital home Canada is strongly moderated and that thread would not have got past the first page, if that.
W10 forums have hardly any banter...which maybe because it is a worldwide forum.

I used to belong to a Hayabusa forum that was mostly posts containing pro-gun garbage or porn with a little info about bikes scattered here and there. Ugh. I'm also on TGR, a nearly non-moderated ski forum that has some of the same issues, but a lot of great content, so it's worth hanging out.
